Jesusanswered, "1You would haveno*authorityover Me, unless* it had beengiven you from above; for thisreason2he who delivered Me to you has the greatersin."
12
As a result of thisPilatemadeefforts to release Him, but the Jewscried out saying, "3If you releasethisMan, you are nofriend of Caesar; everyone who makeshimself out to be a kingopposesCaesar."
13
Therefore when Pilateheardthesewords, he broughtJesus out, and 4satdown on the judgmentseat at a placecalled The Pavement, but 5in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
14
Now it was 6the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the 7sixthhour. And he said to the Jews, "Behold, 8your King!"
15
So they cried out, "9Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!" Pilatesaid to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chiefpriestsanswered, "We havenoking but Caesar."
The Crucifixion
16So he then10handed Him over to them to be crucified.
17
11They tookJesus, therefore, and He went out, 12bearing His owncross, to the place called13the Place of a Skull, which is called14in Hebrew, Golgotha.
18
There they crucified Him, and with Him 15twoothermen, one on eitherside, and Jesus in between.
19
Pilatealsowrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, "16JESUS THE NAZARENE, 17THE KING OF THE JEWS."
20
Thereforemany of the Jewsreadthisinscription, for the placewhereJesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written18in Hebrew, Latin and in Greek.

So the chiefpriests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, "Do not write, '19The King of the Jews '; but that He said, 'I am20King of the Jews.' "
