Thereforemany of the Jewsreadthisinscription, for the placewhereJesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written1in Hebrew, Latin and in Greek.

So the chiefpriests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, "Do not write, '2The King of the Jews '; but that He said, 'I am3King of the Jews.' "

Pilateanswered, "4What I have written I have written."

Then5the soldiers, when they had crucifiedJesus, took His outergarments and made6fourparts, a part to everysoldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in onepiece.

So they said to oneanother, "7Let us not tear it, but castlots for it, to decide whose it shall be"; 8this was to fulfill the Scripture: "THEY 9DIVIDED MY OUTERGARMENTSAMONG THEM, AND FOR MY CLOTHING THEY CASTLOTS."

Therefore the soldiersdidthesethings. 10But standing by the cross of Jesus were 11His mother, and His mother'ssister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and 12MaryMagdalene.

When Jesusthensaw His mother, and 13the disciplewhom He lovedstandingnearby, He said to His mother, "14Woman, behold, your son!"

Then He said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" From that hour the discipletook her into 15his own household.

Afterthis, Jesus, 16knowing that allthings had already been accomplished, 17to fulfill the Scripture, said, "18I amthirsty."

A jarfull of sourwine was standing there; so19they put a spongefull of the sourwine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth.

ThereforewhenJesus had received the sourwine, He said, "20It is finished!" And He bowed His head and 21gave up His spirit.
