The next day 1the crowd that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other small boat there, except one, and that Jesus 2had not entered with His disciples into the boat, but that His disciples had gone away alone.
There came other small boats from 3Tiberias near to the place where they ate the bread after the 4Lord 5had given thanks.
So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselves got into the small boats, and 6came to Capernaum seeking Jesus.
When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, "7Rabbi, when did You get here?"

Words to the People

Jesus answered them and said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you 8seek Me, not because you saw 9signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.
"Do not 10work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to 11eternal life, which 12the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, 13has set His seal."
Therefore they said to Him, "What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?"
Jesus answered and said to them, "This is 14the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He 15has sent."
So they said to Him, "16What then do You do for a 17sign, so that we may see, and believe You? What work do You perform?
"18Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, '19HE GAVE THEM BREAD OUT OF HEAVEN TO EAT.' "
Jesus then said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven.
"For the bread of God is that which 20comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world."
Then they said to Him, "Lord, always 21give us this bread."
Jesus said to them, "22I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me 23will never * thirst.
"But 24I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe.
"25All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly * not cast out.
"For 26I have come down from heaven, 27not to do My own will, but 28the will of Him who 29sent Me.
"This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of 30all that He has given Me I 31lose nothing, but 32raise it up on the last day.
"For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who 33beholds the Son and 34believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will 35raise him up on the last day."

Words to the Jews

36Therefore the Jews were grumbling about Him, because He said, "I am the bread that 37came down out of heaven."
They were saying, "38Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother 39we know? How does He now say, '40I have come down out of heaven '?"
Jesus answered and said to them, "Do not grumble among yourselves.
"No one can come to Me unless * the Father who sent Me 41draws him; and I will 42raise him up on the last day.
"It is written 43in the prophets, '44AND THEY SHALL ALL BE 45TAUGHT OF GOD.' Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me.
"46Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father.
"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes 47has eternal life.
"48I am the bread of life.
"49Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.
"This is the bread which 50comes down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and 51not die.
"52I am the living bread that 53came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, 54he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give 55for the life of the world is 56My flesh."
57Then the Jews 58began to argue with one another, saying, "How can this man give us His flesh to eat?"
So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless * you eat the flesh of 59the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves.
"He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will 60raise him up on the last day.
"For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink.
"He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood 61abides in Me, and I in him.
"As the 62living Father 63sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me.
"This is the bread which 64came down out of heaven; not as 65the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread 66will live forever."

Words to the Disciples

These things He said 67in the synagogue as He taught 68in Capernaum.
Therefore many of His 69disciples, when they heard this said, "70This is a difficult statement; who can listen to it?"
But Jesus, 71conscious * * that His disciples grumbled at this, said to them, "Does this 72cause you to stumble?
"What then if you see 73the Son of Man 74ascending to where He was before?
"75It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; 76the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.
"But there are 77some of you who do not believe." For Jesus 78knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and 79who it was that would betray Him.
And He was saying, "For this reason I have 80said to you, that no one can come to Me unless * 81it has been granted him from the Father."

Peter's Confession of Faith

As a result of this many of His 82disciples 83withdrew * and were not walking with Him anymore.
So Jesus said to 84the twelve, "You do not want to go away also, do you?"
85Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have 86words of eternal life.
"We have believed and have come to know that You are 87the Holy One of God."
Jesus answered them, "88Did I Myself not choose you, 89the twelve, and yet one of you is 90a devil?"
Now He meant Judas 91the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, 92one of 93the twelve, was going to betray Him.
