Leviticus 26

Blessings of Obedience

1 'You shall not make for yourselves 1idols, nor shall you set up for yourselves 2an image or 3a sacred pillar, nor shall you place a 4figured stone in your land to bow down to it; for I am the LORD your God.
2 '5You shall keep My sabbaths and reverence My sanctuary; I am the LORD.
3 '6If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments so as to carry them out,
4 then 7I shall give you rains in their season, so that the land will yield its produce and the trees of the field will bear their fruit.
5 '8Indeed, your threshing will last for you until grape gathering, and grape gathering will last until sowing time. You will thus eat your food to the full and 9live securely in your land.
6 '10I shall also grant peace in the land, so that 11you may lie down with no one making you tremble. 12I shall also eliminate harmful beasts from the land, and 13no sword will pass through your land.
7 'But you will chase your enemies and they will fall before you by the sword;
8 14five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand, and your enemies will fall before you by the sword.
9 'So I will turn toward you and 15make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will 16confirm My covenant with you.
10 '17You will eat the old supply and clear out the old because * of the new.
11 '18Moreover, I will make My dwelling among you, and My soul will not reject you.
12 '19I will also walk among you and be your God, and you shall be My people.
13 '20I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt so that you would not be their slaves, and 21I broke the bars of your yoke and made you walk erect.

Penalties of Disobedience

14 '22But if you do not obey Me and do not carry out all these commandments,
15 if, instead, you 23reject My statutes, and if your soul abhors My ordinances so as not to carry out all My commandments, and so 24break My covenant,
16 I, in turn, will do this to you: I will appoint over you a 25sudden terror, consumption and fever that will waste away the eyes and cause the 26soul to pine away; also, 27you will sow your seed uselessly, for your enemies will eat it up.
17 'I will set My face against you so that you will be struck down before your enemies; and 28those who hate you will rule over you, and 29you will flee when no one is pursuing you.
18 'If also after these things you do not obey Me, then I will punish you 30seven times more for your sins.
19 'I will also 31break down your pride of power; I will also make your sky like iron and your earth like bronze.
20 '32Your strength will be spent uselessly, for your land will not yield its produce and the trees of the land will not yield their fruit.
21 'If then, you 33act with hostility against Me and are unwilling * to obey Me, I will increase the plague on you 34seven times according to your sins.
22 '35I will let loose among you the beasts of the field, which will bereave you of your children and destroy your cattle and reduce your number so that 36your roads lie deserted.
23 '37And if by these things you are not turned to Me, but act with hostility against Me,
24 then I will 38act with hostility against you; and I, even I, will strike you 39seven times for your sins.
25 'I will also bring upon you a sword which will execute 40vengeance for the covenant; and when you gather together into your cities, I will send 41pestilence among you, so that you shall be delivered into enemy hands.
26 '42When I break your staff of bread, ten women will bake your bread in one oven, and they will bring back your bread in rationed amounts, so that you will 43eat and not be satisfied.
27 'Yet if in spite of this you do not obey Me, but act with hostility against Me,
28 then 44I will act with wrathful hostility against you, and I, even I, will punish you seven times for your sins.
29 'Further, 45you will eat the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters you will eat.
30 'I then 46will destroy your high places, and cut down your 47incense altars, and heap your remains on the remains of your idols, for My soul shall abhor you.
31 'I will lay 48waste your cities as well and will make your 49sanctuaries desolate, and I will not 50smell your soothing aromas.
32 'I will make 51the land desolate 52so that your enemies who settle in it will be appalled over it.
33 'You, however, I 53will scatter among the nations and will draw out a sword after you, as your land becomes desolate and your cities become waste.
34 '54Then the land will enjoy its sabbaths all the days of the desolation, while you are in your enemies' land; then the land will rest and enjoy its sabbaths.
35 'All the days of its desolation it will observe the rest which it did not observe on your sabbaths, while you were living on it.
36 'As for those of you who may be left, I will also bring 55weakness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies. And the sound of a driven leaf will chase them, and even when no one is pursuing they will flee as though from the sword, and they will fall.
37 '56They will therefore stumble over each other as if running from the sword, although no one is pursuing; and you will have no strength to stand up before your enemies.
38 'But 57you will perish among the nations, and your enemies' land will consume you.
39 '58So those of you who may be left will rot away because of their iniquity in the lands of your enemies; and also because of the iniquities of their forefathers they will rot away with them.
40 '59If they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their forefathers, in their unfaithfulness which they committed against Me, and also in their acting with hostility against Me-
41 I also was acting with hostility against them, to bring them into the land of their enemies -60or if their uncircumcised heart becomes humbled so that 61they then make amends for their iniquity,
42 then I will remember 62My covenant with Jacob, and I will remember also 63My covenant with Isaac, and 64My covenant with Abraham as well, and I will remember the land.
43 '65For the land will be abandoned by them, and will make up for its sabbaths while it is made desolate without them. They, meanwhile, will be making amends for their iniquity, because they rejected My ordinances and their 66soul abhorred My statutes.
44 'Yet in spite * of this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them, nor will I so 67abhor them as 68to destroy them, 69breaking My covenant with them; for I am the LORD their God.
45 'But I will remember for them the 70covenant with their ancestors, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that 71I might be their God. I am the LORD.' "
46 72These are the statutes and ordinances and laws which the LORD established between Himself and the sons of Israel through Moses at Mount Sinai.

Leviticus 26 Commentary

Chapter 26

Promises upon keeping the precepts. (1-13) Threatenings against disobedience. (14-39) God promises to remember those that repent. (40-46)

Verses 1-13 This chapter contains a general enforcement of all the laws given by Moses; by promises of reward in case of obedience, on the one hand; and threatenings of punishment for disobedience, on the other. While Israel maintained a national regard to God's worship, sabbaths, and sanctuary, and did not turn aside to idolatry, the Lord engaged to continue to them temporal mercies and religious advantages. These great and precious promises, though they relate chiefly to the life which now is, were typical of the spiritual blessings made sure by the covenant of grace to all believers, through Christ. 1. Plenty and abundance of the fruits of the earth. Every good and perfect gift must be expected from above, from the Father of lights. 2. Peace under the Divine protection. Those dwell in safety, that dwell in God. 3. Victory and success in their wars. It is all one with the Lord to save by many or by few. 4. The increase of their people. The gospel church shall be fruitful. 5. The favour of God, which is the fountain of all Good. 6. Tokens of his presence in and by his ordinances. The way to have God's ordinances fixed among us, is to cleave closely to them. 7. The grace of the covenant. All covenant blessings are summed up in the covenant relation, I will be your God, and ye shall be my people; and they are all grounded upon their redemption. Having purchased them, God would own them, and never cast them off till they cast him off.

Verses 14-39 After God has set the blessing before them which would make them a happy people if they would be obedient, he here sets the curse before them, the evils which would make them miserable, if they were disobedient. Two things would bring ruin. 1. A contempt of God's commandments. They that reject the precept, will come at last to renounce the covenant. 2. A contempt of his corrections. If they will not learn obedience by the things they suffer, God himself would be against them; and this is the root and cause of all their misery. And also, The whole creation would be at war with them. All God's sore judgments would be sent against them. The threatenings here are very particular, they were prophecies, and He that foresaw all their rebellions, knew they would prove so. TEMPORAL judgments are threatened. Those who will not be parted from their sins by the commands of God, shall be parted from them by judgments. Those wedded to their lusts, will have enough of them. SPIRITUAL judgments are threatened, which should seize the mind. They should find no acceptance with God. A guilty conscience would be their continual terror. It is righteous with God to leave those to despair of pardon, who presume to sin; and it is owing to free grace, if we are not left to pine away in the iniquity we were born in, and have lived in.

Verses 40-46 Among the Israelites, persons were not always prosperous or afflicted according to their obedience or disobedience. But national prosperity was the effect of national obedience, and national judgments were brought on by national wickedness. Israel was under a peculiar covenant. National wickedness will end in the ruin of any people, especially where the word of God and the light of the gospel are enjoyed. Sooner or later, sin will be the ruin, as well as the reproach, of every people. Oh that, being humbled for our sins, we might avert the rising storm before it bursts upon us! God grant that we may, in this our day, consider the things which belong to our eternal peace.

Chapter Summary

INTRODUCTION TO LEVITICUS 26

In this chapter, after a repetition of some laws against idolatry, and concerning keeping sabbaths, and reverencing the sanctuary of God, Le 26:1,2; in order to encourage the Israelites to keep the various statutes and commandments in this book, and in the preceding, many promises are made of plenty, and peace, and safety from enemies, and of the presence of God with them, Le 26:3-13; and on the contrary, to such as should despise and break his commandments, the most grievous things are threatened, as diseases of body, destruction by their enemies, barrenness and unfruitfulness of land, the sore judgments of wild beasts, famine, sword, and pestilence, Le 26:14-39; and yet after all, when they should confess their sins, and were humbled for them, the Lord promises to remember the covenant he made with their ancestors, and would deal kindly with them, and not cast them away, and utterly destroy them, Le 26:40-46.
