"1Was it not necessary for the Christ to sufferthesethings and to enter into His glory?"
27
Thenbeginning with 2Moses and with all the 3prophets, He explained to them the things concerningHimself in all the Scriptures.
28
And they approached the villagewhere they were going, and 4He acted as though He were goingfarther.
29
But they urged Him, saying, "Stay with us, for it is getting towardevening, and the day is nownearlyover." So He went in to stay with them.
30
When He had reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and 5blessed it, and breaking it, He began giving it to them.
31
Then their 6eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight.
32
They said to oneanother, "Were not our heartsburningwithin us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He 7was explaining the Scriptures to us?"
33
And they got up that veryhour and returned to Jerusalem, and 8foundgatheredtogether the eleven and 9thosewho were with them,
34
saying, "10The Lord has reallyrisen and 11has appeared to Simon."
35
They began to relate their experiences on the road and how12He was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.
Other Appearances
36 While they were tellingthesethings, 13He Himselfstood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be to you."
37
But they were startled and frightened and thought that they were seeing14a spirit.
38
And He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why* do doubtsarise in your hearts?
39
"15See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; 16touch Me and see, for a spirit does not haveflesh and bones as you see that I have."
40
And when He had saidthis, He showed them His hands and His feet.
41
While they still17could not believe it because of their joy and amazement, He said to them, "18Have you anythinghere to eat?"
44
Now He said to them, "20These are My wordswhich I spoke to you while I was still with you, that allthings which are writtenabout Me in the 21Law of Moses and the Prophets and 22the Psalmsmust be fulfilled."
45
Then He 23opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,
46
and He said to them, "24Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and 25riseagain from the dead the thirdday,
47
and that 26repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to 27all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
49
"And behold, 29I am sendingforth the promise of My Father upon you; but 30you are to stay in the cityuntil you are clothed with power from on high."
