The scribes and the Pharisees1were watching Him closely to see if He healed on the Sabbath, so that they might find reason to accuse Him.

But He 2knewwhat they were thinking, and He said to the man with the witheredhand, "Get up and comeforward*!" And he got up and came forward.

And Jesussaid to them, "I ask you, is it lawful to dogoodor to doharm on the Sabbath, to save a lifeor to destroy it?"

After 3lookingaround at them all, He said to him, "Stretch out your hand!" And he did so; and his hand was restored.

But they themselves were filled with rage, and discussedtogether*what* they might do to Jesus.

12 It was at thistime that He wentoff to 4the mountain to 5pray, and He spent the wholenight in prayer to God.

And whendaycame, 6He called His disciples to Him and chosetwelve of them, whom He alsonamed as 7apostles:

Simon, whom He alsonamedPeter, and Andrew his brother; and James and John; and Philip and Bartholomew;

and 8Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot;

Judas the son of James, and JudasIscariot, whobecame a traitor.

Jesus 9camedown with them and stood on a levelplace; and there was 10a largecrowd of His disciples, and a greatthrong of people from allJudea and Jerusalem and the coastalregion of 11Tyre and Sidon,
