"But regarding the fact that the deadriseagain, have you not read in the book of Moses, 1in the passage about the burning bush, howGodspoke to him, saying, '2I AM THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, and the God of Jacob '?

"3He is not the God of the dead, but of the living; you are greatlymistaken."

4One of the scribescame and heard them arguing, and 5recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, "Whatcommandment is the foremost of all?"

Jesusanswered, "The foremost is, '6HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONELORD;

7AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.'

"The second is this, '8YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' There is noothercommandmentgreater than these."

The scribesaid to Him, "Right, Teacher; You have truly*stated that 9HE IS ONE, AND THERE IS NOONEELSEBESIDES HIM;

10AND TO LOVE HIM WITH ALL THE HEART AND WITH ALL THE UNDERSTANDING AND WITH ALL THE STRENGTH, AND TO LOVE ONE'S NEIGHBOR AS HIMSELF, 11is muchmore than allburntofferings and sacrifices."

When Jesussaw that he had answeredintelligently, He said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God."12After that, noone would venture to ask Him anymorequestions.
