572Those who had seizedJesusled Him away to 3Caiaphas, the highpriest, where the scribes and the elders were gatheredtogether.

But 4Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the 5courtyard of the highpriest, and entered in, and satdown with the 6officers to see the outcome.

Now the chiefpriests and the whole7Council kept trying to obtainfalsetestimonyagainstJesus, so that they might put Him to death.

They did not find any, even though manyfalsewitnessescameforward. But later on 8twocameforward,

and said, "Thismanstated, '9I amable to destroy the temple of God and to rebuild it in threedays.' "

The highprieststood up and said to Him, "Do You not answer? What is it that thesemen are testifyingagainst You?"

But 10Jesuskeptsilent. 11And the highpriestsaid to Him, "I 12adjure You by 13the livingGod, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, 14the Son of God."

Jesussaid to him, "15You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter* you will see16THE SON OF MANSITTING AT THE RIGHTHAND OF POWER, and 17COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN."

Then the highpriest18tore his robes and said, "He has blasphemed! Whatfurtherneed do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have nowheard the blasphemy;

what do you think?" They answered, "19He deservesdeath!"
