271Then the soldiers of the governortookJesus into 2the aPraetorium and gathered the whole Roman b3cohortaround Him.
They stripped Him and 4put a scarletrobe on Him.
295And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a creed in His righthand ; and they kneltdownbefore Him and mocked Him, saying, "6Hail, King of the Jews !"
307They spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head.
318After they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robeoff Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.
329As they were coming out, they found a man of 10CyrenenamedSimon, dwhom they pressed into service to bear His cross.
3311And when they came to a placecalled12Golgotha, whichmeansPlace of a Skull,
3413they gave Him 14wine to drinkmixed with gall ; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink.
And when they had crucified Him, 15they divided up His garmentsamong themselves by castingelots.
And sittingdown, they began to 16keepwatchover Him there.
And above His head they put up the chargeagainst Him fwhich read, "17THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS."
At that timetworobbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left.
And thosepassing by were ghurlingabuse at Him, 18wagging their heads40
and saying, "19You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in threedays, saveYourself ! 20If You are the Son of God, comedown from the cross."
In the sameway the chiefpriestsalso, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying,
"21He savedothers ; hHe cannotsaveHimself. 22He is the King of Israel ; let Him nowcomedown from the cross, and we will believe in Him.
"23HE TRUSTS IN GOD ; LET GODRESCUE Him now, IF HE iDELIGHTS IN HIM; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.' "
4424The robbers who had been crucified with Him were alsoinsulting Him with the same words.
4525Now from the jsixthhourdarknesskfell upon all the landuntil the lninthhour.
46About the ninthhourJesuscried out with a loudvoice, saying, "26ELI, ELI, LAMASABACHTHANI ?" that is, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"47
And some of those who were standingthere, when they heard it, began saying, "Thisman is calling for Elijah."
4827Immediatelyone of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sourwine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink.
But the rest of them said, "mLet us seewhetherElijah will come to save Himn."
And Jesus28cried out again with a loudvoice, and yielded up His spirit.
