271Then the soldiers of the governortookJesus into 2the Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman 3cohortaround Him.

They stripped Him and 4put a scarletrobe on Him.

5And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His righthand; and they kneltdownbefore Him and mocked Him, saying, "6Hail, King of the Jews!"

7They spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head.
31
8After they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robeoff Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.
32
9As they were coming out, they found a man of 10CyrenenamedSimon, whom they pressed into service to bear His cross.
The Crucifixion
3311And when they came to a placecalled12Golgotha, whichmeansPlace of a Skull,

13they gave Him 14wine to drinkmixed with gall; and after tasting it, He was unwilling* to drink.

And when they had crucified Him, 15they divided up His garmentsamong themselves by castinglots.

And sittingdown, they began to 16keepwatchover Him there.

And above His head they put up the chargeagainst Him which read, "17THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS."

At that timetworobbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left.

And thosepassing by were hurlingabuse at Him, 18wagging their heads
40
and saying, "19You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in threedays, saveYourself! 20If You are the Son of God, comedown from the cross."

In the sameway the chiefpriestsalso, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying,
42
"21He savedothers; He cannot*saveHimself. 22He is the King of Israel; let Him nowcomedown from the cross, and we will believe in Him.
43
"23HE TRUSTS IN GOD; LET GODRESCUE Him now, IF HE DELIGHTS IN HIM; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.' "

24The robbers who had been crucified with Him were alsoinsulting Him with the same words.

25Now from the sixthhourdarknessfell upon all the landuntil the ninthhour.

About the ninthhourJesuscried out with a loudvoice, saying, "26ELI, ELI, LAMASABACHTHANI?" that is, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"

And some of those who were standingthere, when they heard it, began saying, "Thisman is calling for Elijah."

27Immediatelyone of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sourwine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink.

But the rest of them said, "Let us seewhetherElijah will come to save Him."

And Jesus28cried out again with a loudvoice, and yielded up His spirit.
