And thosepassing by were hurlingabuse at Him, 1wagging their heads

and saying, "2You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in threedays, saveYourself! 3If You are the Son of God, comedown from the cross."

In the sameway the chiefpriestsalso, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying,
42
"4He savedothers; He cannot*saveHimself. 5He is the King of Israel; let Him nowcomedown from the cross, and we will believe in Him.
43
"6HE TRUSTS IN GOD; LET GODRESCUE Him now, IF HE DELIGHTS IN HIM; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.' "

7The robbers who had been crucified with Him were alsoinsulting Him with the same words.

8Now from the sixthhourdarknessfell upon all the landuntil the ninthhour.

About the ninthhourJesuscried out with a loudvoice, saying, "9ELI, ELI, LAMASABACHTHANI?" that is, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"

And some of those who were standingthere, when they heard it, began saying, "Thisman is calling for Elijah."

10Immediatelyone of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sourwine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink.

But the rest of them said, "Let us seewhetherElijah will come to save Him."
