2 Kings 4:20 Meaning and Commentary

2 Kings 4:20

And when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother
The lad led him home, and delivered him to his mother:

he sat on her knees till noon, and then died;
out of her great affection, she took him on her knees, and laid his head in her bosom to sooth the pain, and in this posture he continued until the middle of the day, and then expired; by which it appears it was in the morning when he went into the field, and when the sun was pretty high, and beat strongly on him; which, it may be, produced a fever, and which issued in his death.

2 Kings 4:20 In-Context

18 When the child was grown, the day came that he went out to his father to the reapers.
19 He said to his father, "My head, my head." And he said to his servant, "Carry him to his mother."
20 When he had taken him and brought him to his mother, he sat on her lap until noon, and then died.
21 She went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door behind him and went out.
22 Then she called to her husband and said, "Please send me one of the servants and one of the donkeys, that I may run to the man of God and return."
