Proverbs 10:5

5 A child who gathers crops in summer is wise. But a child who sleeps at harvest time brings shame.

Proverbs 10:5 Meaning and Commentary

Proverbs 10:5

He that gathereth in summer [is] a wise son
Which is the time of gathering the fruits of the earth, and laying them up against winter, as the ant is said to do, ( Proverbs 6:8 ) ;

[but] he that sleepeth in harvest [is] a son that causeth shame;
to himself, and to his parents and relations. The sum of the proverb is, that, in the time of health and youth, persons should be active and industrious in their several callings and stations, and provide against a time of sickness and old age; and that they should lose no opportunities, neither in a natural nor spiritual way, of doing or receiving good.

Proverbs 10:5 In-Context

3 The LORD gives those who do right the food they need. But he lets those who do wrong go hungry.
4 Hands that don't want to work make you poor. But hands that work hard bring wealth to you.
5 A child who gathers crops in summer is wise. But a child who sleeps at harvest time brings shame.
6 Blessings are like crowns on the heads of those who do right. But the trouble caused by what sinners say destroys them.
7 To remember those who do right is a blessing. But the names of those who do wrong will rot.
