Psalms 88:16

16 Your burning anger has swept over me. Your terrors have destroyed me.

Psalms 88:16 Meaning and Commentary

Psalms 88:16

Thy fierce wrath goeth over me
Or "wraths" F8, burning wrath; the whole of divine wrath, in all its fierceness, due to the sins of his people: these, like the mighty waves of the sea, passed over him, threatening to overwhelm him, ( Psalms 89:38 ) ,

thy terrors have cut me off;
from the presence of God, and out of his sight; as sometimes the Lord's people are ready to imagine, when forsaken by him, ( Psalms 31:22 ) or from the land of the living, as the Messiah was, and in a judicial way, though not for any sin of his own, ( Isaiah 53:8 ) ( Daniel 9:26 ) .

Psalms 88:16 In-Context

14 Lord, why do you say no to me? Why do you turn your face away from me?
15 I've been in pain ever since I was young. I've been close to death. You have made me suffer terrible things. I have lost all hope.
16 Your burning anger has swept over me. Your terrors have destroyed me.
17 All day long they surround me like a flood. They have closed in all around me.
18 You have taken my companions and loved ones away from me. The darkness is my closest friend.
