Genesis 30:21 Meaning and Commentary

Genesis 30:21

And afterwards she bare a daughter
Which some writers, as Aben Ezra observes, say, was at the same birth with Zebulun, a twin with him; but being said to be afterwards shows the contrary: and called her name Dinah;
which signifies "judgment": perhaps she may have some reference to the first son of Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid, whom she called Dan, a name of the same signification; intimating as if it was a clear case that judgment went on her side; and that by the number of children she had, it was plain God had determined in her favour.

Genesis 30:21 In-Context

19 Then Leah became pregnant again and gave birth to a sixth son for Jacob.
20 She named him Zebulun, for she said, “God has given me a good reward. Now my husband will treat me with respect, for I have given him six sons.”
21 Later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.
22 Then God remembered Rachel’s plight and answered her prayers by enabling her to have children.
23 She became pregnant and gave birth to a son. “God has removed my disgrace,” she said.
