Jeremías 41

1 Asesinato de Gedalías
Ahora bien, a mediados del otoño,
Ismael, hijo de Netanías y nieto de Elisama, que era miembro de la familia real y que había sido uno de los altos funcionarios del rey, fue con diez hombres a Mizpa para encontrarse con Gedalías. Mientras comían juntos,

2 Ismael y sus diez hombres de pronto se levantaron, desenvainaron sus espadas y mataron a Gedalías, a quien el rey de Babilonia había nombrado gobernador.

3 Ismael también mató a todos los judíos y a los soldados babilónicos
que estaban con Gedalías en Mizpa.

4 Al día siguiente, antes de que alguien se enterara del asesinato de Gedalías,

5 llegaron ochenta hombres de Siquem, de Silo y de Samaria para adorar en el templo del Señor
. Venían con sus barbas afeitadas, con las ropas rasgadas y con cortaduras que se habían hecho en el cuerpo. También traían consigo incienso y ofrendas de grano.

6 Entonces Ismael salió de Mizpa para ir a su encuentro e iba llorando por el camino. Cuando los alcanzó, les dijo: «¡Oh, vengan y vean lo que le ha sucedido a Gedalías!».

7 En cuanto entraron a la ciudad, Ismael y sus hombres los mataron a todos, menos a diez, y echaron sus cuerpos en una cisterna.

8 Los otros diez convencieron a Ismael que los dejara en libertad, con la promesa de traerle todo el trigo, la cebada, el aceite de oliva y la miel que habían escondido.

9 La cisterna donde Ismael echó los cuerpos de los hombres que asesinó era grande, cavada por órdenes del rey Asa cuando fortificó Mizpa para protegerse de Baasa, rey de Israel. Así que, Ismael, hijo de Netanías, la llenó de cadáveres.

10 Después Ismael capturó a las hijas del rey y al resto del pueblo que había quedado en Mizpa bajo el cuidado de Gedalías, quien había sido encargado por Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia. Los llevó consigo y comenzó el regreso a la tierra de Amón.

11 Sin embargo, cuando Johanán, hijo de Carea, y los otros líderes guerrilleros se enteraron de los crímenes cometidos por Ismael,

12 reunieron a todos sus hombres y salieron a detenerlo. Lo alcanzaron junto al estanque grande cerca de Gabaón.

13 La gente que Ismael había capturado gritó de alegría cuando vio a Johanán y a los otros líderes guerrilleros.

14 Entonces todos los cautivos de Mizpa escaparon y empezaron a ayudar a Johanán.

15 Mientras tanto, Ismael y ocho de sus hombres escaparon de Johanán y huyeron a la tierra de los amonitas.

16 Entonces Johanán, hijo de Carea, y los otros líderes guerrilleros tomaron a toda la gente que habían liberado en Gabaón: los soldados, las mujeres, los niños y los funcionarios de la corte
que Ismael había capturado después de matar a Gedalías.

17 Los llevaron a todos a la aldea de Gerut-quimam cerca de Belén, donde hicieron preparativos para irse a Egipto

18 porque tenían miedo de lo que harían los babilonios
cuando se enteraran de que Ismael había matado a Gedalías, el gobernador designado por el rey babilónico.

Chapter 41

Ishmael murders Gedaliah. (1-10) Johanan recovers the captives, and purposes to retire to Egypt. (11-18)

Verses 1-10 Those who hate the worshippers of God, often put on the appearance of piety, that they may the easier hurt them. As death often meets men where they least expect it, we should continually search whether we are in such a state and frame of mind, as we would wish to be found in when called to appear before our Judge. Sometimes the ransom of a man's life is his riches. But those who think to bribe death, saying, Slay us not, for we have treasures in the field, will find themselves wretchedly deceived. This melancholy history warns us, never to be secure in this world. We never can be sure of peace on this side heaven.

Verses 11-18 The success of villany must be short, and none can prosper who harden their hearts against God. And those justly lose comfort in real fears, who excuse themselves in sin by pretended fears. The removal of a prudent and peaceable ruler, and the succession of another who is rash and ambitious, affects the welfare of many. Only those are happy and steady who fear the Lord and walk in his ways.

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 41

This chapter relates the event of the conspiracy against Gedaliah Johanan and the princes had informed him of, to which he gave no credit; but it proved true. An account is given of the murder of Gedaliah, and of the Jews and Chaldeans with him; and of the perpetrators of it, Jer 41:1-3; and of the chief of them, Ishmael's treacherous dealing with fourscore men that came from several parts to the house of God to offer sacrifice, who all perished by his hands, excepting ten, Jer 41:4-9; and of the rest of the people at Mizpah being carried away, in order to be captives among the Ammonites, Jer 41:10; and of Johanan, and the rest of the captives, hearing of all this, and coming out to fight with Ishmael; upon which the people deserted him, and he fled to the Ammonites, Jer 41:11-15; and of Johanan and the people settling in the way to Egypt, to flee there on occasion, should the Chaldeans fall on them for what was done to the governor, which they feared, Jer 41:16-18.
