Jeremías 8

1 »En ese día —dice el Señor
—, el enemigo abrirá las tumbas de los reyes y los funcionarios de Judá, las tumbas de los sacerdotes, los profetas y la gente común de Jerusalén.

2 Esparcirá los huesos sobre la tierra ante el sol, la luna y las estrellas: los dioses que mi pueblo ha amado, servido y rendido culto. Sus huesos no serán recogidos nuevamente ni enterrados, sino que serán esparcidos sobre la tierra como si fueran estiércol.

3 Y la gente que sobreviva de esta nación malvada deseará morir en vez de vivir en el lugar donde los enviaré. ¡Yo, el Señor
de los Ejércitos Celestiales, he hablado!

4 Engaño de los falsos profetas
»Jeremías, dile al pueblo: “Esto dice el Señor
:
»‘Cuando una persona se cae, ¿acaso no vuelve a levantarse?
Cuando descubre que está en un camino equivocado, ¿acaso no da la vuelta?

5 Entonces, ¿por qué esta gente continúa en su camino de autodestrucción?
¿Por qué los habitantes de Jerusalén rehúsan regresar?
Se aferran a sus mentiras
y se niegan a volver.

6 Escucho sus conversaciones
y no oigo una sola palabra de verdad.
¿Hay alguien que esté apenado por haber hecho lo malo?
¿Alguien que diga: “¡Qué cosa tan terrible he hecho!”?
¡No! ¡Todos corren por el camino del pecado
tan veloces como galopa un caballo a la batalla!

7 Hasta la cigüeña que surca el cielo
conoce el tiempo de su migración,
al igual que la tórtola, la golondrina y la grulla.
Todas regresan en el tiempo señalado cada año.
¡Pero no en el caso de mi pueblo!
Ellos no conocen las leyes del Señor
.

8 »’¿Cómo pueden decir: “Somos sabios porque tenemos la palabra del Señor
”,
cuando, al escribir mentiras, sus maestros la han torcido?

9 Estos maestros sabios caerán
en la trampa de su propia necedad,
porque han rechazado la palabra del Señor
.
Después de todo, ¿son ellos tan sabios?

10 Les daré sus esposas a otros
y sus fincas a extranjeros.
Desde el menos importante hasta el más importante,
sus vidas están dominadas por la avaricia.
Es cierto, incluso mis profetas y sacerdotes son así;
todos ellos son unos farsantes.

11 Ofrecen curas superficiales
para la herida mortal de mi pueblo.
Dan garantías de paz
cuando no hay paz.

12 ¿Se avergüenzan de estos actos repugnantes?
De ninguna manera, ¡ni siquiera saben lo que es sonrojarse!
Por lo tanto, estarán entre los caídos en la matanza;
serán derribados cuando los castigue,
dice el Señor
.

13 Con toda seguridad los consumiré.
No habrá más cosechas de higos ni de uvas;
todos sus árboles frutales morirán.
Todo lo que les di, pronto se acabará.
¡Yo, el Señor
, he hablado!’.

14 »Luego el pueblo dirá:
“¿Por qué deberíamos esperar aquí para morir?
Vengan, vayamos a las ciudades fortificadas para morir allí.
Pues el Señor
nuestro Dios ha decretado nuestra destrucción
y nos ha dado a beber una copa de veneno
porque pecamos contra el Señor
.

15 Esperábamos paz, pero la paz no llegó;
esperábamos tiempos de sanidad, pero solo encontramos terror”.

16 »Ya se puede oír el resoplido de los caballos de guerra del enemigo
¡desde tan lejos como la tierra de Dan en el norte!
El relincho de sus sementales hace temblar toda la tierra.
Vienen a devorar el país y todo lo que hay en él,
tanto las ciudades como los habitantes.

17 Enviaré estas tropas enemigas entre ustedes
como serpientes venenosas a las que no pueden encantar.
Los morderán y ustedes morirán.
¡Yo, el Señor
, he hablado!».

18 Jeremías llora por Judá
Mi dolor no tiene remedio;
mi corazón está destrozado.

19 Escuchen el llanto de mi pueblo;
puede oírse por toda la tierra.
«¿Acaso ha abandonado el Señor
a Jerusalén?
—pregunta la gente—.
¿No está más su Rey allí?».
«Oh, ¿por qué han provocado mi enojo con sus ídolos tallados
y sus despreciables dioses ajenos?», pregunta el Señor
.

20 «Ya se acabó la cosecha,
y el verano se ha ido —se lamenta el pueblo—,
¡y todavía no hemos sido salvados!».

21 Sufro con el dolor de mi pueblo,
lloro y estoy abrumado de profunda pena.

22 ¿No hay medicina en Galaad?
¿No hay un médico allí?
¿Por qué no hay sanidad
para las heridas de mi pueblo?

Jeremías 8 Commentary

Chapter 8

The remains of the dead exposed. (1-3) The stupidity of the people, compared with the instinct of the brute creation. (4-13) The alarm of the invasion, and lamentation. (14-22)

Verses 1-3 Though no real hurt can be done to a dead body, yet disgrace to the remains of wicked persons may alarm those yet alive; and this reminds us that the Divine justice and punishments extend beyond the grave. Whatever befalls us here, let us humble ourselves before God, and seek his mercy.

Verses 4-13 What brought this ruin? 1. The people would not attend to reason; they would not act in the affairs of their souls with common prudence. Sin is backsliding; it is going back from the way that leads to life, to that which leads to destruction. 2. They would not attend to the warning of conscience. They did not take the first step towards repentance: true repentance begins in serious inquiry as to what we have done, from conviction that we have done amiss. 3. They would not attend to the ways of providence, nor understand the voice of God in them, ver. ( 7 ) . They know not how to improve the seasons of grace, which God affords. Many boast of their religious knowledge, yet, unless taught by the Spirit of God, the instinct of brutes is a more sure guide than their supposed wisdom. 4. They would not attend to the written word. Many enjoy abundance of the means of grace, have Bibles and ministers, but they have them in vain. They will soon be ashamed of their devices. The pretenders to wisdom were the priests and the false prophets. They flattered people in sin, and so flattered them into destruction, silencing their fears and complaints with, All is well. Selfish teachers may promise peace when there is no peace; and thus men encourage each other in committing evil; but in the day of visitation they will have no refuge to flee unto.

Verses 14-22 At length they begin to see the hand of God lifted up. And when God appears against us, every thing that is against us appears formidable. As salvation only can be found in the Lord, so the present moment should be seized. Is there no medicine proper for a sick and dying kingdom? Is there no skilful, faithful hand to apply the medicine? Yes, God is able to help and to heal them. If sinners die of their wounds, their blood is upon their own heads. The blood of Christ is balm in Gilead, his Spirit is the Physician there, all-sufficient; so that the people may be healed, but will not. Thus men die unpardoned and unchanged, for they will not come to Christ to be saved.

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 8

In this chapter the prophet goes on to denounce grievous calamities upon the people of the Jews; such as would make death more eligible than life; and that because of their idolatry, Jer 8:1-3 and also because of their heinous backslidings in other respects, and continuance in them, Jer 8:4,5 likewise their impenitence and stupidity, Jer 8:6,7 their vain conceit of themselves and their own wisdom; their false interpretation of Scripture, and their rejection of the word of God, Jer 8:8,9 their covetousness, for which it is said their wives and fields should be given to others, Jer 8:10, their flattery of the people, and their impudence, on account of which, ruin and consumption, and a blast on their vines and fig trees, are threatened, Jer 8:11-13, their consternation is described, by their fleeing to their defenced cities; by their sad disappointment in the expectation of peace and prosperity; and the near approach of their enemies; devouring their land, and all in it; who are compared to serpents and cockatrices that cannot be charmed, Jer 8:14-17 and the chapter is closed with the prophet's expressions of sorrow and concern for his people, because of their distress their idolatry had brought upon them; and because of their hopeless, and seemingly irrecoverable, state and condition, Jer 8:18-22.
