1 Juicio del Señor
contra Nínive
¡Qué aflicción le espera a Nínive,
la ciudad de crímenes y mentiras!
Está saturada de riquezas
y nunca le faltan víctimas.

2 ¡Oigan el chasquido de los látigos
y el retumbo de las ruedas!
Los cascos de los caballos retumban
y los carros de guerra traquetean sin control.

3 ¡Miren cómo destellan las espadas y brillan las lanzas
cuando pasa la caballería!
Hay muertos incontables,
hay montones de cadáveres,
tantos que la gente tropieza con ellos.

4 Y todo porque Nínive
—la ciudad hermosa e incrédula,
la amante con encantos mortales—
sedujo a las naciones con su belleza.
Ella les enseñó toda su magia
y hechizó a la gente por todas partes.

5 «¡Yo soy tu enemigo!
—dice el Señor
de los Ejércitos Celestiales—.
Ahora te levantaré la falda
y mostraré tu desnudez y tu vergüenza a toda la tierra.

6 Te cubriré con inmundicias
y mostraré al mundo lo vil que eres.

7 Todos los que te vean se alejarán de ti y dirán:
“Nínive yace en ruinas.
¿Dónde están los que lloran por ella?”.
¿Lamenta alguien tu destrucción?».

8 ¿Acaso eres mejor que la ciudad de Tebas,
situada en el río Nilo y rodeada de agua?
Estaba protegida a su alrededor por el río,
con el agua por muralla.

9 Etiopía
y la tierra de Egipto
le dieron ayuda sin límites.
Las naciones de Fut y de Libia
estaban entre sus aliados.

10 Sin embargo, Tebas cayó
y su gente fue llevada cautiva
y sus bebés fueron estrellados
contra las piedras de las calles hasta morir.
Los soldados tiraban los dados
para quedarse con los oficiales egipcios como sirvientes.
Ataron con cadenas a todos sus líderes.

11 Y tú, Nínive, también te tambalearás como un borracho;
te esconderás por temor al ataque del enemigo.

12 Todas tus fortalezas se derrumbarán.
Serán devoradas como higos maduros
que caen en la boca
de los que sacuden los árboles.

13 Tus tropas serán tan débiles e indefensas
como mujeres.
Las puertas de tu país se abrirán de par en par al enemigo,
les prenderán fuego y se quemarán.

14 ¡Prepárate para el sitio!
¡Almacena agua!
¡Refuerza las defensas!
¡Métete en los pozos para pisotear el barro
y llenar los moldes
y hacer ladrillos para reparar los muros!

15 Sin embargo, el fuego te devorará;
serás derribada a espada.
El enemigo te consumirá como langostas;
devorará todo lo que encuentre.
Aunque te multipliques como una nube de langostas,
no tendrás escapatoria.

16 Tus comerciantes se han multiplicado
hasta llegar a ser más numerosos que las estrellas.
Pero son como una nube de langostas
que despojan la tierra y alzan el vuelo.

17 Tus guardias
y tus oficiales también son como una nube de langostas
que se amontona sobre los cercos en un día frío.
Pero al igual que las langostas que vuelan cuando sale el sol,
todos levantarán el vuelo y desaparecerán.

18 Tus pastores duermen, oh rey asirio,
tus príncipes yacen muertos en el polvo.
Tu pueblo está disperso por las montañas,
sin nadie que lo reúna.

19 Tu herida no tiene remedio
tu lesión es mortal.
Todos los que se enteren de tu destrucción
aplaudirán con alegría.
¿Dónde se puede encontrar a alguien
que no haya sufrido tu constante crueldad?

Chapter 3

The sins and judgments of Nineveh. (1-7) Its utter destruction. (8-19)

Verses 1-7 When proud sinners are brought down, others should learn not to lift themselves up. The fall of this great city should be a lesson to private persons, who increase wealth by fraud and oppression. They are preparing enemies for themselves; and if the Lord sees good to punish them in this world, they will have none to pity them. Every man who seeks his own prosperity, safety, and peace, should not only act in an upright, honourable manner, but with kindness to all.

Verses 8-19 Strong-holds, even the strongest, are no defence against the judgments of God. They shall be unable to do any thing for themselves. The Chaldeans and Medes would devour the land like canker-worms. The Assyrians also would be eaten up by their own numerous hired troops, which seem to be meant by the word rendered "merchants." Those that have done evil to their neighbours, will find it come home to them. Nineveh, and many other cities, states, and empires, have been ruined, and should be a warning to us. Are we better, except as there are some true Christians amongst us, who are a greater security, and a stronger defence, than all the advantages of situation or strength? When the Lord shows himself against a people, every thing they trust in must fail, or prove a disadvantage; but he continues good to Israel. He is a strong-hold for every believer in time of trouble, that cannot be stormed or taken; and he knoweth those that trust in Him.

INTRODUCTION TO NAHUM 3

In this chapter is contained the prophecy of the destruction of Nineveh, and with it the whole Assyrian empire; the causes of which, besides those before mentioned, were the murders, lies, and robberies it was full of, Na 3:1 for which it should be swiftly and cruelly destroyed, Na 3:2,3 as also its whoredoms and witchcrafts, or idolatry, by which nations and families were seduced, Na 3:4 and hence she should be treated as a harlot, her nakedness exposed, and she cast out with contempt, and mocked at by all, Na 3:5-7 and all those things she placed her confidence in are shown to be of no avail; as her situation and fortresses, as she might learn from the case of No Amon, Na 3:8-12 nor the number of her inhabitants, which were weak as women; nor even her merchants, captains, nobles, and king himself, Na 3:13-18 nor the people she was in alliance with, who would now mock at her, her case being irrecoverable and incurable, Na 3:19.
