Ruth 4:6

And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself
On such a condition, because he had a wife, as the Targum suggests; and to take another would, as that intimates, tend to introduce contention into his family, and make him uncomfortable; so Josephus says ^F8, he had a wife and children, for that reason it was not convenient for him to take the purchase on such a condition:

lest I mar my own inheritance;
he considered, that as he had a wife and children already and as he might have more by marrying Ruth, his family expenses would be increased, and his estate diminished; and what would remain must be divided among many, and this estate in particular go to Ruth's firstborn, whereby his own inheritance would be scattered and crumbled, and come to little or nothing; add to all which, he might suppose that her ancient mother Naomi would be upon his hands to maintain also:

redeem thou my right for thyself
which I am ready to give up to thee, for thou hast no wife, as the Targum expresses it:

for I can not redeem it;
in the circumstances I am, and upon the condition annexed to the purchase.

4 Pensé que yo debía hablar contigo para que pudieras redimir la tierra si deseas hacerlo. Si quieres la tierra, entonces cómprala ahora en presencia de estos testigos. Pero si no quieres la tierra, házmelo saber ahora mismo, porque, después de ti, soy el pariente más cercano para redimirla.
El hombre respondió:
—Muy bien, yo la redimo.

5 Entonces le dijo Booz:
—Por supuesto, al comprar tú la tierra de Noemí, estás obligado a casarte con Rut, la viuda moabita. De esta manera ella podrá tener hijos que lleven el nombre de su esposo y así conservar la tierra para su familia.

6 —Entonces no puedo redimir la tierra —respondió el pariente redentor— porque esto pondría en peligro mi propia herencia. Redime tú la tierra; yo no lo puedo hacer.

7 En esos días era costumbre en Israel que cualquiera que transfiriera un derecho de compra se quitara la sandalia y se la entregara a la otra parte. Esto hacía válida la transacción de una manera pública.

8 Entonces el otro redentor de la familia se quitó la sandalia mientras le decía a Booz:
—Compra tú la tierra.
