for all the firstborn are mine.1 When I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, I set apart for myself every firstborn in Israel, whether man or animal. They are to be mine. I am the LORD."214
The LORD said to Moses in the Desert of Sinai,315
"Count4 the Levites by their families and clans. Count every male a month old or more."516
So Moses counted them, as he was commanded by the word of the LORD.
These were the names of the sons of Levi:6 Gershon,7 Kohath8 and Merari.918
These were the names of the Gershonite clans: Libni and Shimei.1019
The Kohathite clans: Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel.1120
The Merarite clans:12 Mahli and Mushi.13 These were the Levite clans, according to their families.
To Gershon14 belonged the clans of the Libnites and Shimeites;15 these were the Gershonite clans.
The number of all the males a month old or more who were counted was 7,500.
The Gershonite clans were to camp on the west, behind the tabernacle.1624
The leader of the families of the Gershonites was Eliasaph son of Lael.
At the Tent of Meeting the Gershonites were responsible for the care of the tabernacle17 and tent, its coverings,18 the curtain at the entrance19 to the Tent of Meeting,2026
the curtains of the courtyard21, the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard surrounding the tabernacle and altar,22 and the ropes23--and everything24 related to their use.
To Kohath25 belonged the clans of the Amramites, Izharites, Hebronites and Uzzielites;26 these were the Kohathite27 clans.
The number of all the males a month old or more28 was "8,600.a The Kohathites were responsible29 for the care of the sanctuary.3029
The Kohathite clans were to camp on the south side31 of the tabernacle.
The leader of the families of the Kohathite clans was Elizaphan32 son of Uzziel.
They were responsible for the care of the ark,33 the table,34 the lampstand,35 the altars,36 the articles37 of the sanctuary used in ministering, the curtain,38 and everything related to their use.3932
The chief leader of the Levites was Eleazar40 son of Aaron, the priest. He was appointed over those who were responsible41 for the care of the sanctuary.4233
To Merari belonged the clans of the Mahlites and the Mushites;43 these were the Merarite clans.4434
The number of all the males a month old or more45 who were counted was 6,200.
The leader of the families of the Merarite clans was Zuriel son of Abihail; they were to camp on the north side of the tabernacle.4636
The Merarites were appointed47 to take care of the frames of the tabernacle,48 its crossbars,49 posts,50 bases, all its equipment, and everything related to their use,5137
as well as the posts of the surrounding courtyard52 with their bases, tent pegs53 and ropes.
Moses and Aaron and his sons were to camp to the east54 of the tabernacle, toward the sunrise, in front of the Tent of Meeting.55 They were responsible for the care of the sanctuary56 on behalf of the Israelites. Anyone else who approached the sanctuary was to be put to death.5739
The total number of Levites counted58 at the LORD's command by Moses and Aaron according to their clans, including every male a month old or more, was 22,000.5940
The LORD said to Moses, "Count all the firstborn Israelite males who are a month old or more60 and make a list of their names.6141
Take the Levites for me in place of all the firstborn of the Israelites,62 and the livestock of the Levites in place of all the firstborn of the livestock of the Israelites. I am the LORD."6342
So Moses counted all the firstborn of the Israelites, as the LORD commanded him.
The total number of firstborn males a month old or more,64 listed by name, was 22,273.6544
The LORD also said to Moses,
"Take the Levites in place of all the firstborn of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites in place of their livestock. The Levites are to be mine.66 I am the LORD.6746
To redeem68 the 273 firstborn Israelites who exceed the number of the Levites,
collect five shekelsb69 for each one, according to the sanctuary shekel,70 which weighs twenty gerahs.7148
Give the money for the redemption72 of the additional Israelites to Aaron and his sons."7349
So Moses collected the redemption money74 from those who exceeded the number redeemed by the Levites.
From the firstborn of the Israelites75 he collected silver weighing "1,365 shekels,c76 according to the sanctuary shekel.
Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and his sons, as he was commanded by the word of the LORD.
