Deuteronomio 11

Amor y obediencia al SEÑOR

1 »Amen al SEÑOR su Dios y cumplan siempre sus ordenanzas, preceptos, normas y mandamientos.

2 Recuerden hoy que fueron ustedes, y no sus hijos, los que vieron y experimentaron la disciplina del SEÑOR su Dios. Ustedes vieron su gran despliegue de fuerza y de poder,

3 y los hechos y señales que realizó en Egipto contra el faraón y contra todo su país.

4 Ustedes vieron lo que hizo contra el ejército de los egipcios, y cómo desató las aguas del Mar Rojo sobre sus caballos y carros de guerra, cuando estos los perseguían a ustedes. El SEÑOR los destruyó para siempre.

5 »Recuerden también lo que él hizo por ustedes en el desierto, hasta que llegaron a este lugar.

6 Además, vieron lo que les hizo a Datán y Abirán, hijos de Eliab el rubenita, pues en presencia de todo el pueblo hizo que la tierra se abriera y se los tragara junto con sus familias, sus carpas y todo lo que les pertenecía.

7 Ciertamente ustedes han visto con sus propios ojos todas las maravillas que el SEÑOR ha hecho.

8 »Por eso, cumplan todos los mandamientos que hoy les mando, para que sean fuertes y puedan cruzar el Jordán y tomar posesión de la tierra,

9 y para que vivan mucho tiempo en esa tierra que el SEÑOR juró dar a los antepasados de ustedes y a sus descendientes, tierra donde abundan la leche y la miel.

10 Esa tierra, de la que van a tomar posesión, no es como la de Egipto, de donde salieron; allá ustedes plantaban sus semillas y tenían que regarlas^[a] como se riega un huerto.

11 En cambio, la tierra que van a poseer es tierra de montañas y de valles, regada por la lluvia del cielo.

12 El SEÑOR su Dios es quien la cuida; los ojos del SEÑOR su Dios están sobre ella todo el año, de principio a fin.

13 »Si ustedes obedecen fielmente los mandamientos que hoy les doy, y si aman al SEÑOR su Dios y le sirven con todo el corazón y con toda el alma,

14 entonces él enviará^[b] la lluvia oportuna sobre su tierra, en otoño y en primavera^[c], para que obtengan el trigo, el vino y el aceite.

15 También hará^[d] que crezca hierba en los campos para su ganado, y ustedes comerán y quedarán satisfechos.

16 »¡Cuidado! No se dejen seducir. No se descarríen ni adoren a otros dioses, ni se inclinen ante ellos,

17 porque entonces se encenderá la ira del SEÑOR contra ustedes, y cerrará los cielos para que no llueva; el suelo no dará sus frutos, y pronto ustedes desaparecerán de la buena tierra que les da el SEÑOR.

18 Grábense estas palabras en el corazón y en la mente; átenlas en sus manos como un signo, y llévenlas en su frente como una marca.

19 Enséñenselas a sus hijos y repítanselas cuando estén en su casa y cuando anden por el camino, cuando se acuesten y cuando se levanten;

20 escríbanlas en los postes de su casa y en los portones de sus ciudades.

21 Así, mientras existan los cielos sobre la tierra, ustedes y sus descendientes prolongarán su vida sobre la tierra que el SEÑOR juró a los antepasados de ustedes que les daría.

22 »Si ustedes obedecen todos estos mandamientos que les doy, y aman al SEÑOR su Dios, y siguen por todos sus caminos y le son fieles,

23 entonces el SEÑOR expulsará del territorio de ustedes a todas esas naciones. Así podrán desposeerlas, aunque sean más grandes y más fuertes que ustedes.

24 Todo lugar donde planten el pie será de ustedes; su territorio se extenderá desde el desierto hasta el monte Líbano, y desde el río Éufrates hasta el mar Mediterráneo.

25 Nadie podrá hacerles frente. Por dondequiera que vayan, el SEÑOR su Dios hará que todo el mundo sienta miedo y terror ante ustedes, como se lo ha prometido.

26 »Hoy les doy a elegir entre la bendición y la maldición:

27 bendición, si obedecen los mandamientos que yo, el SEÑOR su Dios, hoy les mando obedecer;

28 maldición, si desobedecen los mandamientos del SEÑOR su Dios y se apartan del camino que hoy les mando seguir, y se van tras dioses extraños que jamás han conocido.

29 Cuando el SEÑOR su Dios los haya hecho entrar en la tierra que van a poseer, ustedes bendecirán al monte Guerizín y maldecirán al monte Ebal.

30 Esos montes están al otro lado del Jordán, hacia el oeste, en el territorio de los cananeos que viven en el Arabá, en la vecindad de Guilgal, junto a las encinas de Moré.

31 »Ustedes están a punto de cruzar el Jordán y entrar a tomar posesión de la tierra que les da el SEÑOR su Dios. Cuando la hayan tomado y ya estén viviendo allí,

32 cuiden de obedecer todos los preceptos y las normas que hoy les mando.

Deuteronomio 11 Commentary

Chapter 11

The great work God wrought for Israel. (1-7) Promises and threatenings. (8-17) Careful study of God's word requisite. (18-25) The blessings and the curse set forth. (26-32)

Verses 1-7 Observe the connexion of these two; Thou shalt love the Lord, and keep his charge. Love will work in obedience, and that only is acceptable obedience which flows from a principle of ( 1 John. 5:3 ) works of God which their eyes had seen. What our eyes have seen, especially in our early days, should affect us, and make us better long afterwards.

Verses 8-17 Moses sets before them, for the future, life and death, the blessing and the curse, according as they did or did not keep God's commandment. Sin tends to shorten the days of all men, and to shorten the days of a people's prosperity. God will bless them with an abundance of all good things, if they would love him and serve him. Godliness has the promise of the life that now is; but the favour of God shall put gladness into the heart, more than the increase of corn, and wine, and oil. Revolt from God to idols would certainly be their ruin. Take heed that your hearts be not deceived. All who forsake God to set their affection upon any creature, will find themselves wretchedly deceived, to their own destruction; and this will make it worse, that it was for want of taking heed.

Verses 18-25 Let all be directed by the three rules here given. 1. Let our hearts be filled with the word of God. There will not be good practices in the life, unless there be good thoughts, good affections, and good principles in the heart. 2. Let our eyes be fixed upon the word of God, having constant regard to it as the guide of our way, as the rule of our work, ( Psalms 119:30 ) . 3. Let our tongues be employed about the word of God. Nor will any thing do more to cause prosperity, and keeping up religion in a nation, than the good education of children.

Verses 26-32 Moses sums up all the arguments for obedience in two words, the blessing and the curse. He charged the people to choose which they would have. Moses then appointed a public and solemn proclamation of the blessing and curse, to be made upon the two mountains of Gerizim and Ebal. We have broken the law, and are under its curse, without remedy from ourselves. In mercy, the gospel again sets before us a blessing and a curse. A blessing, if we obey the call to repentance, to faith in Christ, and newness of heart and life through him; an awful curse, if we neglect so great salvation. Let us thankfully welcome these glad tidings of great joy; and let us not harden our hearts, but hear this voice of God while it is called to-day, and while he invites us to come to him upon a mercy-seat. Let us be diligent to make our calling and election sure.

In this chapter, the exhortation to love the Lord, and keep his commands, is repeated and urged again and again from various considerations; as not only from the chastisement of Pharaoh and the wicked Egyptians, but of such Israelites who offended the Lord, and transgressed his law, De 12:1-7, from the goodness and excellency of the land they were going to inherit, De 11:8-11, from the blessing of rain that would come upon it, and be productive of all good things for man and beast, in case of obedience, and a restraint of it in case of disobedience, De 11:12-17, from the continuance of them and their offspring in the land, should they be careful to observe the commands themselves, and teach them their children, De 11:18-21, and from the extensiveness of their conquests and dominions, De 11:22-25 and from the different issue and effects of their conduct and behaviour, a blessing upon them if obedient, but a curse if disobedient, De 11:26-28 and the chapter is concluded with an exhortation to pronounce the blessing on Mount Gerizim, and the curse on Mount Ebal; the situation of which places is described when they should come into the land of Canaan, of which they are assured, De 11:29-32.
