Revised Standard Version (RSV) New International Version (NIV)
Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of persons ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives
waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be kindled and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire! 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.
But according to his promise we wait for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.
Therefore, beloved, since you wait for these, be zealous to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. 14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.
And count the forbearance of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, 15 Bear in mind that our Lord's patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him.
speaking of this as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures. 16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.
