King James Version (KJV) New International Version (NIV)
Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, 1 Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers,
That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled , neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand . 2 not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by some prophecy, report or letter supposed to have come from us, saying that the day of the Lord has already come.
Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed , the son of perdition; 3 Don't let anyone deceive you in any way, for [that day will not come] until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction.
Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. 4 He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God.
Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? 5 Don't you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things?
And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. 6 And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time.
For the mystery of iniquity doth already work : only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. 7 For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way.
And then shall that Wicked be revealed , whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming.
Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 9 The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders,
And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish ; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved . 10 and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.
And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 11 For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie
That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. 12 and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.
