The Word of Yahweh that came to Joel, the son of Pethuel. 1 The word of the LORD that came to Joel son of Pethuel.
Hear this, you elders, And listen, all you inhabitants of the land. Has this ever happened in your days, Or in the days of your fathers? 2 Hear this, you elders; listen, all who live in the land. Has anything like this ever happened in your days or in the days of your forefathers?
Tell your children about it, And have your children tell their children, And their children, another generation. 3 Tell it to your children, and let your children tell it to their children, and their children to the next generation.
What the swarming locust has left, the great locust has eaten. What the great locust has left, the grasshopper has eaten. What the grasshopper has left, the caterpillar has eaten. 4 What the locust swarm has left the great locusts have eaten; what the great locusts have left the young locusts have eaten; what the young locusts have left other locusts have eaten.
Wake up, you drunkards, and weep! Wail, all you drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine; For it is cut off from your mouth. 5 Wake up, you drunkards, and weep! Wail, all you drinkers of wine; wail because of the new wine, for it has been snatched from your lips.
For a nation has come up on my land, strong, and without number. His teeth are the teeth of a lion, And he has the fangs of a lioness. 6 A nation has invaded my land, powerful and without number; it has the teeth of a lion, the fangs of a lioness.
He has laid my vine waste, And stripped my fig tree. He has stripped its bark, and thrown it away. Its branches are made white. 7 It has laid waste my vines and ruined my fig trees. It has stripped off their bark and thrown it away, leaving their branches white.
Mourn like a virgin dressed in sackcloth for the husband of her youth! 8 Mourn like a virgin in sackcloth grieving for the husband of her youth.
The meal offering and the drink offering are cut off from Yahweh's house. The priests, Yahweh's ministers, mourn. 9 Grain offerings and drink offerings are cut off from the house of the LORD. The priests are in mourning, those who minister before the LORD.
The field is laid waste. The land mourns, for the grain is destroyed, The new wine has dried up, And the oil languishes. 10 The fields are ruined, the ground is dried up; the grain is destroyed, the new wine is dried up, the oil fails.
Be confounded, you farmers! Wail, you vineyard keepers; For the wheat and for the barley; For the harvest of the field has perished. 11 Despair, you farmers, wail, you vine growers; grieve for the wheat and the barley, because the harvest of the field is destroyed.
The vine has dried up, and the fig tree withered; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, Even all of the trees of the field are withered; For joy has withered away from the sons of men. 12 The vine is dried up and the fig tree is withered; the pomegranate, the palm and the apple tree-- all the trees of the field--are dried up. Surely the joy of mankind is withered away.
Put on sackcloth and mourn, you priests! Wail, you ministers of the altar. Come, lie all night in sackcloth, you ministers of my God, For the meal offering and the drink offering are withheld from your God's house. 13 Put on sackcloth, O priests, and mourn; wail, you who minister before the altar. Come, spend the night in sackcloth, you who minister before my God; for the grain offerings and drink offerings are withheld from the house of your God.
Sanctify a fast. Call a solemn assembly. Gather the elders, And all the inhabitants of the land, to the house of Yahweh, your God, And cry to Yahweh. 14 Declare a holy fast; call a sacred assembly. Summon the elders and all who live in the land to the house of the LORD your God, and cry out to the LORD.
Alas for the day! For the day of Yahweh is at hand, And it will come as destruction from the Almighty. 15 Alas for that day! For the day of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty.
Isn't the food cut off before our eyes; Joy and gladness from the house of our God? 16 Has not the food been cut off before our very eyes-- joy and gladness from the house of our God?
The seeds rot under their clods. The granaries are laid desolate. The barns are broken down, for the grain has withered. 17 The seeds are shriveled beneath the clods. The storehouses are in ruins, the granaries have been broken down, for the grain has dried up.
How the animals groan! The herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture. Yes, the flocks of sheep are made desolate. 18 How the cattle moan! The herds mill about because they have no pasture; even the flocks of sheep are suffering.
Yahweh, I cry to you, For the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness, And the flame has burned all the trees of the field. 19 To you, O LORD, I call, for fire has devoured the open pastures and flames have burned up all the trees of the field.
Yes, the animals of the field pant to you, For the water brooks have dried up, And the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness. 20 Even the wild animals pant for you; the streams of water have dried up and fire has devoured the open pastures.
