New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
Great crowds were following Jesus. He turned around and said to them, 25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said:
"If you want to be my follower you must love me more than your own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters -- yes, more than your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple. 26 "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters--yes, even his own life--he cannot be my disciple.
And you cannot be my disciple if you do not carry your own cross and follow me. 27 And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
"But don't begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first getting estimates and then checking to see if there is enough money to pay the bills? 28 "Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it?
Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation before running out of funds. And then how everyone would laugh at you! 29 For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him,
They would say, 'There's the person who started that building and ran out of money before it was finished!' 30 saying, 'This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.'
"Or what king would ever dream of going to war without first sitting down with his counselors and discussing whether his army of ten thousand is strong enough to defeat the twenty thousand soldiers who are marching against him? 31 "Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand?
If he is not able, then while the enemy is still far away, he will send a delegation to discuss terms of peace. 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace.
So no one can become my disciple without giving up everything for me. 33 In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.
