The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 1 The LORD said to Moses,
Speak to the Israelites, and get twelve staffs from them, one for each ancestral house, from all the leaders of their ancestral houses. Write each man's name on his staff, 2 "Speak to the Israelites and get twelve staffs from them, one from the leader of each of their ancestral tribes. Write the name of each man on his staff.
and write Aaron's name on the staff of Levi. For there shall be one staff for the head of each ancestral house. 3 On the staff of Levi write Aaron's name, for there must be one staff for the head of each ancestral tribe.
Place them in the tent of meeting before the covenant, where I meet with you. 4 Place them in the Tent of Meeting in front of the Testimony, where I meet with you.
And the staff of the man whom I choose shall sprout; thus I will put a stop to the complaints of the Israelites that they continually make against you. 5 The staff belonging to the man I choose will sprout, and I will rid myself of this constant grumbling against you by the Israelites."
Moses spoke to the Israelites; and all their leaders gave him staffs, one for each leader, according to their ancestral houses, twelve staffs; and the staff of Aaron was among theirs. 6 So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and their leaders gave him twelve staffs, one for the leader of each of their ancestral tribes, and Aaron's staff was among them.
So Moses placed the staffs before the Lord in the tent of the covenant. 7 Moses placed the staffs before the LORD in the Tent of the Testimony.
When Moses went into the tent of the covenant on the next day, the staff of Aaron for the house of Levi had sprouted. It put forth buds, produced blossoms, and bore ripe almonds. 8 The next day Moses entered the Tent of the Testimony and saw that Aaron's staff, which represented the house of Levi, had not only sprouted but had budded, blossomed and produced almonds.
Then Moses brought out all the staffs from before the Lord to all the Israelites; and they looked, and each man took his staff. 9 Then Moses brought out all the staffs from the LORD's presence to all the Israelites. They looked at them, and each man took his own staff.
And the Lord said to Moses, "Put back the staff of Aaron before the covenant, to be kept as a warning to rebels, so that you may make an end of their complaints against me, or else they will die." 10 The LORD said to Moses, "Put back Aaron's staff in front of the Testimony, to be kept as a sign to the rebellious. This will put an end to their grumbling against me, so that they will not die."
Moses did so; just as the Lord commanded him, so he did. 11 Moses did just as the LORD commanded him.
The Israelites said to Moses, "We are perishing; we are lost, all of us are lost! 12 The Israelites said to Moses, "We will die! We are lost, we are all lost!
Everyone who approaches the tabernacle of the Lord will die. Are we all to perish?" 13 Anyone who even comes near the tabernacle of the LORD will die. Are we all going to die?"
