Good News Translation (GNT) New International Version (NIV)
I said, "I will be careful about what I do and will not let my tongue make me sin; I will not say anything while evil people are near." 1 I said, "I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are in my presence."
I kept quiet, not saying a word, not even about anything good! But my suffering only grew worse, 2 But when I was silent and still, not even saying anything good, my anguish increased.
and I was overcome with anxiety. The more I thought, the more troubled I became; I could not keep from asking: 3 My heart grew hot within me, and as I meditated, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue:
"Lord, how long will I live? When will I die? Tell me how soon my life will end." 4 "Show me, O LORD, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life.
How short you have made my life! In your sight my lifetime seems nothing. Indeed every living being is no more than a puff of wind, 5 You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Each man's life is but a breath. "Selah"
no more than a shadow. All we do is for nothing; we gather wealth, but don't know who will get it. 6 Man is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro: He bustles about, but only in vain; he heaps up wealth, not knowing who will get it.
What, then, can I hope for, Lord? I put my hope in you. 7 "But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.
Save me from all my sins, and don't let fools make fun of me. 8 Save me from all my transgressions; do not make me the scorn of fools.
I will keep quiet, I will not say a word, for you are the one who made me suffer like this. 9 I was silent; I would not open my mouth, for you are the one who has done this.
Don't punish me any more! I am about to die from your blows. 10 Remove your scourge from me; I am overcome by the blow of your hand.
You punish our sins by your rebukes, and like a moth you destroy what we love. Indeed we are no more than a puff of wind! 11 You rebuke and discipline men for their sin; you consume their wealth like a moth-- each man is but a breath. "Selah"
Hear my prayer, Lord, and listen to my cry; come to my aid when I weep. Like all my ancestors I am only your guest for a little while. 12 "Hear my prayer, O LORD, listen to my cry for help; be not deaf to my weeping. For I dwell with you as an alien, a stranger, as all my fathers were.
Leave me alone so that I may have some happiness before I go away and am no more. 13 Look away from me, that I may rejoice again before I depart and am no more."
