Philip went down to a city in Samaria and preached the Messiah to them. 5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Christ there.
The crowds paid attention with one mind to what Philip said, as they heard and saw the signs he was performing. 6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the miraculous signs he did, they all paid close attention to what he said.
For unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed, and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. 7 With shrieks, evil spirits came out of many, and many paralytics and cripples were healed.
So there was great joy in that city. 8 So there was great joy in that city.
A man named Simon had previously practiced sorcery in that city and astounded the Samaritan people, while claiming to be somebody great. 9 Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great,
They all paid attention to him, from the least of them to the greatest, and they said, "This man is called the Great Power of God!" 10 and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, "This man is the divine power known as the Great Power."
They were attentive to him because he had astounded them with his sorceries for a long time. 11 They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his magic.
But when they believed Philip, as he proclaimed the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
Then even Simon himself believed. And after he was baptized, he went around constantly with Philip and was astounded as he observed the signs and great miracles that were being performed. 13 Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw.
When the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had welcomed God's message, they sent Peter and John to them. 14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them.
After they went down there, they prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit,
For He had not yet come down on any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.
Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
When Simon saw that the Holy Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money, 18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money
saying, "Give me this power too, so that anyone I lay hands on may receive the Holy Spirit." 19 and said, "Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit."
But Peter told him, "May your silver be destroyed with you, because you thought the gift of God could be obtained with money! 20 Peter answered: "May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money!
You have no part or share in this matter, because your heart is not right before God. 21 You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God.
Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that the intent of your heart may be forgiven you. 22 Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive you for having such a thought in your heart.
For I see you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity." 23 For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin."
"Please pray to the Lord for me," Simon replied, "so that nothing you have said may happen to me." 24 Then Simon answered, "Pray to the Lord for me so that nothing you have said may happen to me."
Then, after they had testified and spoken the message of the Lord, they traveled back to Jerusalem, evangelizing many villages of the Samaritans. 25 When they had testified and proclaimed the word of the Lord, Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many Samaritan villages.
An angel of the Lord spoke to Philip: "Get up and go south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to desert Gaza." 26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, "Go south to the road--the desert road--that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza."
So he got up and went. There was an Ethiopian man, a eunuch and high official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to worship in Jerusalem 27 So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship,
and was sitting in his chariot on his way home, reading the prophet Isaiah aloud. 28 and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the book of Isaiah the prophet.
The Spirit told Philip, "Go and join that chariot." 29 The Spirit told Philip, "Go to that chariot and stay near it."
When Philip ran up to it, he heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, "Do you understand what you're reading?" 30 Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. "Do you understand what you are reading?" Philip asked.
"How can I," he said, "unless someone guides me?" So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 31 "How can I," he said, "unless someone explains it to me?" So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
Now the Scripture passage he was reading was this: He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb is silent before its shearer, so He does not open His mouth. 32 The eunuch was reading this passage of Scripture: "He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before the shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth.
In His humiliation justice was denied Him. Who will describe His generation? For His life is taken from the earth. 33 In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth."
The eunuch replied to Philip, "I ask you, who is the prophet saying this about-himself or another person?" 34 The eunuch asked Philip, "Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?"
So Philip proceeded to tell him the good news about Jesus, beginning from that Scripture. 35 Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.
As they were traveling down the road, they came to some water. The eunuch said, "Look, there's water! What would keep me from being baptized?" [ 36 As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, "Look, here is water. Why shouldn't I be baptized?"
And Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart you may." And he replied, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."] 37 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him.
Then he ordered the chariot to stop, and both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. 38 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing.
When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him any longer. But he went on his way rejoicing. 39 Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea.
Philip appeared in Azotus, and passing through, he was evangelizing all the towns until he came to Caesarea. 40
