English Standard Version (ESV) New International Version (NIV)
See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. 8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.
For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form,
and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. 10 and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority.
In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 11 In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature, not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ,
having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. 12 having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.
And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,
by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 14 having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross.
He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. 16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.
These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ. 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.
Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind, 18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you for the prize. Such a person goes into great detail about what he has seen, and his unspiritual mind puffs him up with idle notions.
and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God. 19 He has lost connection with the Head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.
If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations-- 20 Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules:
"Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch" 21 "Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!"?
(referring to things that all perish as they are used)--according to human precepts and teachings? 22 These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings.
These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh. 23 Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.
