| New Living Translation (NLT) | New International Version (NIV) |
| 1 Then God instructed the people as follows: | 1 And God spoke all these words: |
| 2 "I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from slavery in Egypt. | 2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. |
| 3 "Do not worship any other gods besides me. | 3 "You shall have no other gods before me. |
| 4 "Do not make idols of any kind, whether in the shape of birds or animals or fish. | 4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. |
| 5 You must never worship or bow down to them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not share your affection with any other god! I do not leave unpunished the sins of those who hate me, but I punish the children for the sins of their parents to the third and fourth generations. | 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, |
| 6 But I lavish my love on those who love me and obey my commands, even for a thousand generations. | 6 but showing love to a thousand [ generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments. |
| 7 "Do not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name. | 7 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. |
