King James Version (KJV) New International Version (NIV)
And God said unto Jacob, Arise , go up to Bethel, and dwell there: and make there an altar unto God, that appeared unto thee when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother. 1 Then God said to Jacob, "Go up to Bethel and settle there, and build an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau."
Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean , and change your garments: 2 So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, "Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes.
And let us arise , and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went . 3 Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone."
And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem. 4 So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the oak at Shechem.
And they journeyed : and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob. 5 Then they set out, and the terror of God fell upon the towns all around them so that no one pursued them.
So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Bethel, he and all the people that were with him. 6 Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.
