New International Reader's Version (NIRV) New International Version (NIV)
In the beginning, the Word was already there. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
He was with God in the beginning. 2 He was with God in the beginning.
All things were made through him. Nothing that has been made was made without him. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
Life was in him, and that life was the light for all people. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
The light shines in the darkness. But the darkness has not understood it. 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.
A man came who was sent from God. His name was John. 6 There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John.
He came to give witness about that light. He gave witness so that all people could believe. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe.
John himself was not the light. He came only as a witness to the light. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. 9 The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.
The Word was in the world that was made through him. But the world did not recognize him. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.
He came to what was his own. But his own people did not accept him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.
Some people did accept him. They believed in his name. He gave them the right to become children of God. 12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God--
To be a child of God has nothing to do with human parents. Children of God are not born because of human choice or because a husband wants them to be born. They are born because of what God does. 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.
The Word became a human being. He made his home with us. We have seen his glory. It is the glory of the one and only Son. He came from the Father. And he was full of grace and truth. 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John gives witness about him. He cries out and says, "This was the one I was talking about. I said, 'He who comes after me is more important than I am. He is more important because he existed before I was born.' " 15 John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' "
We have all received one blessing after another. God's grace is not limited. 16 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.
Moses gave us the law. Jesus Christ has given us grace and truth. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
No one has ever seen God. But God, the one and only Son, is at the Father's side. He has shown us what God is like. 18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.
