And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem so that they could ask him, "Who are you?" 19 Now this was John's testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.
And he confessed--and he did not deny, and confessed--"I am not the Christ!" 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ. "
And they asked him, "Then who [are] you? Are you Elijah?" And he said, "I am not!" "Are you the Prophet?" And he answered, "No!" 21 They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No."
Then they said to him, "Who are you, so that we can give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?" 22 Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself ?"
He said, "I [am] 'the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, "Make straight the way of the Lord," ' just as Isaiah the prophet said." 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' "
(And they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 24 Now some Pharisees who had been sent
And they asked him and said to him, "Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" 25 questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"
John answered them, saying, "I baptize with water. In your midst stands [one] whom you do not know-- 26 "I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know.
the one who comes after me, of whom I am not worthy {to untie} the strap of his sandal!" 27 He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie."
These [things] took place in Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing. 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
On the next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, "Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
This one is [the one] about whom I said, 'After me is coming a man who is ahead of me, because he existed before me.' 30 This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'
And I did not know him, but in order that he could be revealed to Israel, because of this I came baptizing with water." 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel."
And John testified, saying, "I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and remaining upon him. 32 Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.
And I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water, that one said to me, '[The one] upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon him--this one is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' 33 I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.'
And I have seen and testify that this one is the Chosen One of God. 34 I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God."
