And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" 19 Now this was John's testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.
He confessed, he did not deny, but confessed, "I am not the Christ." 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ. "
And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the prophet?" And he answered, "No." 21 They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No."
They said to him then, "Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" 22 Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself ?"
He said, "I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,' as the prophet Isaiah said." 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' "
Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. 24 Now some Pharisees who had been sent
They asked him, "Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?" 25 questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"
John answered them, "I baptize with water; but among you stands one whom you do not know, 26 "I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know.
even he who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie." 27 He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie."
This took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks before me, for he was before me.' 30 This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'
I myself did not know him; but for this I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel." 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel."
And John bore witness, "I saw the Spirit descend as a dove from heaven, and it remained on him. 32 Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.
I myself did not know him; but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' 33 I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.'
And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God." 34 I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God."
