New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
By this time they had arrived in Jerusalem again. As Jesus was walking through the Temple area, the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the other leaders came up to him. They demanded, 27 They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him.
"By whose authority did you drive out the merchants from the Temple? Who gave you such authority?" 28 "By what authority are you doing these things?" they asked. "And who gave you authority to do this?"
"I'll tell who gave me authority to do these things if you answer one question," Jesus replied. 29 Jesus replied, "I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
"Did John's baptism come from heaven or was it merely human? Answer me!" 30 John's baptism--was it from heaven, or from men? Tell me!"
They talked it over among themselves. "If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why we didn't believe him. 31 They discussed it among themselves and said, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask, 'Then why didn't you believe him?'
But do we dare say it was merely human?" For they were afraid that the people would start a riot, since everyone thought that John was a prophet. 32 But if we say, 'From men' . . ." (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)
So they finally replied, "We don't know." And Jesus responded, "Then I won't answer your question either." 33 So they answered Jesus, "We don't know." Jesus said, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things."
