New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
When Jesus had finished saying these things, he said to his disciples, 1 When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples,
"As you know, the Passover celebration begins in two days, and I, the Son of Man, will be betrayed and crucified." 2 "As you know, the Passover is two days away--and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified."
At that same time the leading priests and other leaders were meeting at the residence of Caiaphas, the high priest, 3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas,
to discuss how to capture Jesus secretly and put him to death. 4 and they plotted to arrest Jesus in some sly way and kill him.
"But not during the Passover," they agreed, "or there will be a riot." 5 "But not during the Feast," they said, "or there may be a riot among the people."
Meanwhile, Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had leprosy. 6 While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of a man known as Simon the Leper,
During supper, a woman came in with a beautiful jar of expensive perfume and poured it over his head. 7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.
The disciples were indignant when they saw this. "What a waste of money," they said. 8 When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. "Why this waste?" they asked.
"She could have sold it for a fortune and given the money to the poor." 9 "This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor."
But Jesus replied, "Why berate her for doing such a good thing to me? 10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, "Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me.
You will always have the poor among you, but I will not be here with you much longer. 11 The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me.
She has poured this perfume on me to prepare my body for burial. 12 When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.
I assure you, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this woman's deed will be talked about in her memory." 13 I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her."
