Revised Standard Version (RSV) New International Version (NIV)
My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments; 1 My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart,
for length of days and years of life and abundant welfare will they give you. 2 for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity.
Let not loyalty and faithfulness forsake you; bind them about your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. 3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
So you will find favor and good repute in the sight of God and man. 4 Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.
It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones. 8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
Honor the LORD with your substance and with the first fruits of all your produce; 9 Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;
then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine. 10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline or be weary of his reproof, 11 My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline and do not resent his rebuke,
for the LORD reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights. 12 because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gets understanding, 13 Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding,
for the gain from it is better than gain from silver and its profit better than gold. 14 for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.
She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her. 15 She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.
Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. 16 Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.
Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. 17 Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace.
She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called happy. 18 She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed.
The LORD by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens; 19 By wisdom the LORD laid the earth's foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place;
by his knowledge the deeps broke forth, and the clouds drop down the dew. 20 by his knowledge the deeps were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew.
