1 Corinthians 11

NIRV 1 Follow my example, just as I follow the example of Christ. NIV 1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. NIRV 2 I praise you for being faithful in remembering me. I also praise you for staying true to all my teachings, just as I gave them to you. NIV 2 I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the teachings, just as I passed them on to you. NIRV 3 Now I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ. The head of the woman is the man. And the head of Christ is God. NIV 3 Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. NIRV 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered brings shame on his head. NIV 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. NIRV 5 And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered brings shame on her head. It is just as if her head were shaved. NIV 5 And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head--it is just as though her head were shaved. NIRV 6 What if a woman does not cover her head? She should have her hair cut off. But it is shameful for her to cut her hair or shave it off. So she should cover her head. NIV 6 If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head. NIRV 7 A man should not cover his head. He is the likeness and glory of God. But the woman is the glory of the man. NIV 7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. NIRV 8 The man did not come from the woman. The woman came from the man. NIV 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; NIRV 9 Also, the man was not created for the woman. The woman was created for the man. NIV 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. NIRV 10 That's why a woman should have her head covered. It shows that she is under authority. She should also cover her head because of the angels. NIV 10 For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head. NIRV 11 But here is how things are for those who belong to the Lord. The woman is not independent of the man. And the man is not independent of the woman. NIV 11 In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. NIRV 12 The woman came from the man, and the man is born from the woman. But everything comes from God. NIV 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. NIRV 13 You be the judge. Is it proper for a woman to pray to God without covering her head? NIV 13 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? NIRV 14 Suppose a man has long hair. Doesn't the very nature of things teach you that it is shameful? NIV 14 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, NIRV 15 And suppose a woman has long hair. Doesn't the very nature of things teach you that it is her glory? Long hair is given to her as a covering. NIV 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. NIRV 16 If anyone wants to argue about that, we don't have any other practice. And God's churches don't either. NIV 16 If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice--nor do the churches of God. NIRV 17 In the following matters, I don't praise you. Your meetings do more harm than good. NIV 17 In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good. NIRV 18 First, here is what people are telling me. When you come together as a church, you take sides. And in some ways I believe it. NIV 18 In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. NIRV 19 No doubt you need to take sides in order to show which of you God agrees with! NIV 19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God's approval. NIRV 20 When you come together, it is not the Lord's Supper you eat. NIV 20 When you come together, it is not the Lord's Supper you eat, NIRV 21 As you eat, each of you goes ahead without waiting for anyone else. One remains hungry and another gets drunk. NIV 21 for as you eat, each of you goes ahead without waiting for anybody else. One remains hungry, another gets drunk. NIRV 22 Don't you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you think so little of God's church that you shame those in it who have nothing? What should I say to you? Should I praise you for that? Certainly not! NIV 22 Don't you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you for this? Certainly not! NIRV 23 I passed on to you what I received from the Lord. On the night the Lord Jesus was handed over to his enemies, he took bread. NIV 23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, NIRV 24 When he had given thanks, he broke it. He said, "This is my body. It is given for you. Every time you eat it, do it in memory of me." NIV 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." NIRV 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup. He said, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Every time you drink it, do it in memory of me." NIV 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." NIRV 26 When you eat the bread and drink the cup, you are announcing the Lord's death until he comes again. NIV 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. NIRV 27 So do not eat the bread or drink the cup of the Lord in a way that isn't worthy of him. If you do, you will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. NIV 27 Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. NIRV 28 A person should take a careful look at himself before he eats the bread and drinks from the cup. NIV 28 A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. NIRV 29 Anyone who eats and drinks must recognize the body of the Lord. If he doesn't, God will judge him for it. NIV 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. NIRV 30 That is why many of you are weak and sick. That is why a number of you have died. NIV 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. NIRV 31 We should judge ourselves. Then we would not be found guilty. NIV 31 But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment. NIRV 32 When the Lord judges us, he corrects us. Then we will not be judged along with the rest of the world. NIV 32 When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world. NIRV 33 My brothers and sisters, when you come together to eat, wait for each other. NIV 33 So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for each other. NIRV 34 Those who are hungry should eat at home. Then when you come together, you will not be judged. When I come, I will give you more directions. NIV 34 If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment. And when I come I will give further directions.
