NIRV 1 Elijah was from Tishbe in the land of Gilead. He said to Ahab, "I serve the Lord. He is the God of Israel. You can be sure that he lives. And you can be just as sure that there won't be any dew or rain on the whole land. There won't be any during the next few years. It won't come until I say so." NIV 1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word." NIRV 2 Then a message from the LORD came to Elijah. It said, NIV 2 Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah: NIRV 3 "Leave this place. Go east and hide in the Kerith Valley. I have ordered some ravens to feed you there." NIV 4 You will drink from the brook, and I have ordered the ravens to feed you there." NIRV 5 So Elijah did what the LORD had told him to do. He went to the Kerith Valley. It was east of the Jordan River. He stayed there. NIV 5 So he did what the LORD had told him. He went to the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan, and stayed there. NIRV 6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning. They also brought him bread and meat in the evening. He drank water from the brook. NIV 6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook. NIRV 7 Some time later the brook dried up. It hadn't rained in the land for quite a while. NIV 7 Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land. NIRV 8 A message came to Elijah from the Lord. He said, NIV 8 Then the word of the LORD came to him: NIRV 9 "Go right away to Zarephath in the territory of Sidon. Stay there. I have commanded a widow in that place to supply you with food." NIV 9 "Go at once to Zarephath of Sidon and stay there. I have commanded a widow in that place to supply you with food." NIRV 10 So Elijah went to Zarephath. He came to the town gate. A widow was there gathering sticks. He called out to her. He asked, "Would you bring me a little water in a jar? I need a drink." NIV 10 So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, "Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?" NIRV 11 She went to get the water. Then he called out to her, "Please bring me a piece of bread too." NIV 11 As she was going to get it, he called, "And bring me, please, a piece of bread." NIRV 12 "I don't have any bread," she replied. "And that's just as sure as the LORD your God is alive. All I have is a small amount of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I'm gathering a few sticks to take home. I'll make one last meal for myself and my son. We'll eat it. After that, we'll die." NIV 12 "As surely as the LORD your God lives," she replied, "I don't have any bread--only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it--and die." NIRV 13 Elijah said to her, "Don't be afraid. Go home. Do what you have said. But first make a little bread for me. Make it out of what you have. Bring it to me. Then make some for yourself and your son. NIV 13 Elijah said to her, "Don't be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small cake of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. NIRV 14 "The LORD is the God of Israel. He says, 'The jar of flour will not be used up. The jug will always have oil in it. You will have flour and oil until the day the LORD sends rain on the land.' " NIV 14 For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD gives rain on the land.' " NIRV 15 She went away and did what Elijah had told her to do. So Elijah had food every day. There was also food for the woman and her family. NIV 15 She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. NIRV 16 The jar of flour wasn't used up. The jug always had oil in it. That's what the LORD had said would happen. He had spoken that message through Elijah. NIV 16 For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the LORD spoken by Elijah. NIRV 17 Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house became sick. He got worse and worse. Finally he stopped breathing. NIV 17 Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. He grew worse and worse, and finally stopped breathing. NIRV 18 The woman said to Elijah, "You are a man of God. What do you have against me? Did you come to bring my sin out into the open? Did you come to kill my son?" NIV 18 She said to Elijah, "What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?" NIRV 19 "Give me your son," Elijah replied. He took him from her arms. He carried him to the upstairs room where he was staying. He put him down on his bed. NIV 19 "Give me your son," Elijah replied. He took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his bed. NIRV 20 Then Elijah cried out to the Lord. He said, "LORD my God, I'm staying with this widow. Have you brought pain and sorrow to her? Have you caused her son to die?" NIV 20 Then he cried out to the LORD, "O LORD my God, have you brought tragedy also upon this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die?" NIRV 21 Then he lay down on the boy three times. He cried out to the Lord. He said, "LORD my God, give this boy's life back to him!" NIV 21 Then he stretched himself out on the boy three times and cried to the LORD, "O LORD my God, let this boy's life return to him!" NIRV 22 The LORD answered Elijah's prayer. He gave the boy's life back to him. So the boy lived. NIV 22 The LORD heard Elijah's cry, and the boy's life returned to him, and he lived. NIRV 23 Elijah picked up the boy.
