1 Peter 3

NRS 1 Wives, in the same way, accept the authority of your husbands, so that, even if some of them do not obey the word, they may be won over without a word by their wives' conduct, NIV 1 Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, NRS 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. NIV 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. NRS 3 Do not adorn yourselves outwardly by braiding your hair, and by wearing gold ornaments or fine clothing; NIV 3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. NRS 4 rather, let your adornment be the inner self with the lasting beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in God's sight. NIV 4 Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. NRS 5 It was in this way long ago that the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves by accepting the authority of their husbands. NIV 5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful. They were submissive to their own husbands, NRS 6 Thus Sarah obeyed Abraham and called him lord. You have become her daughters as long as you do what is good and never let fears alarm you. NIV 6 like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear. NRS 7 Husbands, in the same way, show consideration for your wives in your life together, paying honor to the woman as the weaker sex, since they too are also heirs of the gracious gift of life—so that nothing may hinder your prayers. NIV 7 Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers. NRS 8 Finally, all of you, have unity of spirit, sympathy, love for one another, a tender heart, and a humble mind. NIV 8 Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. NRS 9 Do not repay evil for evil or abuse for abuse; but, on the contrary, repay with a blessing. It is for this that you were called—that you might inherit a blessing. NIV 9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. NRS 10 For "Those who desire life and desire to see good days, let them keep their tongues from evil and their lips from speaking deceit; NIV 10 For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. NRS 11 let them turn away from evil and do good; let them seek peace and pursue it. NIV 11 He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. NRS 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil." NIV 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil." NRS 13 Now who will harm you if you are eager to do what is good? NIV 13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? NRS 14 But even if you do suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear, and do not be intimidated, NIV 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened." NRS 15 but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you; NIV 15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, NRS 16 yet do it with gentleness and reverence. Keep your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who abuse you for your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame. NIV 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. NRS 17 For it is better to suffer for doing good, if suffering should be God's will, than to suffer for doing evil. NIV 17 It is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. NRS 18 For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, NIV 18 For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, NRS 19 in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, NIV 19 through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison NRS 20 who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. NIV 20 who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, NRS 21 And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you—not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, NIV 21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also--not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, NRS 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him. NIV 22 who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand--with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.
