Acts 8:5-25

MSG 5 Going down to a Samaritan city, Philip proclaimed the Message of the Messiah. NIV 5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Christ there. MSG 6 When the people heard what he had to say and saw the miracles, the clear signs of God's action, they hung on his every word. NIV 6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the miraculous signs he did, they all paid close attention to what he said. MSG 7 Many who could neither stand nor walk were healed that day. The evil spirits protested loudly as they were sent on their way. NIV 7 With shrieks, evil spirits came out of many, and many paralytics and cripples were healed. MSG 8 And what joy in the city! NIV 8 So there was great joy in that city. MSG 9 Previous to Philip's arrival, a certain Simon had practiced magic in the city, posing as a famous man and dazzling all the Samaritans with his wizardry. NIV 9 Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great, MSG 10 He had them all, from little children to old men, eating out of his hand. They all thought he had supernatural powers, and called him "the Great Wizard." NIV 10 and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, "This man is the divine power known as the Great Power." MSG 11 He had been around a long time and everyone was more or less in awe of him. NIV 11 They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his magic. MSG 12 But when Philip came to town announcing the news of God's kingdom and proclaiming the name of Jesus Christ, they forgot Simon and were baptized, becoming believers right and left! NIV 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. MSG 13 Even Simon himself believed and was baptized. From that moment he was like Philip's shadow, so fascinated with all the God-signs and miracles that he wouldn't leave Philip's side. NIV 13 Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw. MSG 14 When the apostles in Jerusalem received the report that Samaria had accepted God's Message, they sent Peter and John down NIV 14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. MSG 15 to pray for them to receive the Holy Spirit. NIV 15 When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, MSG 16 Up to this point they had only been baptized in the name of the Master Jesus; the Holy Spirit hadn't yet fallen on them. NIV 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. MSG 17 Then the apostles laid their hands on them and they did receive the Holy Spirit. NIV 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. MSG 18 When Simon saw that the apostles by merely laying on hands conferred the Spirit, he pulled out his money, excited, NIV 18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money MSG 19 and said, "Sell me your secret! Show me how you did that! How much do you want? Name your price!" NIV 19 and said, "Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit." MSG 20 Peter said, "To hell with your money! And you along with it. Why, that's unthinkable - trying to buy God's gift! NIV 20 Peter answered: "May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! MSG 21 You'll never be part of what God is doing by striking bargains and offering bribes. NIV 21 You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God. MSG 22 Change your ways - and now! Ask the Master to forgive you for trying to use God to make money. NIV 22 Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. MSG 23 I can see this is an old habit with you; you reek with money-lust." NIV 23 For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin." MSG 24 "Oh!" said Simon, "pray for me! Pray to the Master that nothing like that will ever happen to me!" NIV 24 Then Simon answered, "Pray to the Lord for me so that nothing you have said may happen to me." MSG 25 And with that, the apostles were on their way, continuing to witness and spread the Message of God's salvation, preaching in every Samaritan town they passed through on their return to Jerusalem. NIV 25 When they had testified and proclaimed the word of the Lord, Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many Samaritan villages.
