Deuteronomy 29

CEBA 1 These are the words of the covenant the LORD commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in the land of Moab in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb. NIV 1 These are the terms of the covenant the LORD commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb. CEBA 2 Moses summoned all Israel, saying to them: You've seen with your own eyes everything the LORD did in Egypt, to Pharaoh, his servants, and all his land— NIV 2 Moses summoned all the Israelites and said to them: Your eyes have seen all that the LORD did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials and to all his land. CEBA 3 the great trials your eyes witnessed, those awesome signs and wonders! NIV 3 With your own eyes you saw those great trials, those miraculous signs and great wonders. CEBA 4 But until this very moment, the LORD hasn't given you insight to understand, eyes to see, or ears to hear. NIV 4 But to this day the LORD has not given you a mind that understands or eyes that see or ears that hear. CEBA 5 I've led you in the wilderness forty years now; neither the clothes on your back nor the sandals on your feet have worn out. NIV 5 During the forty years that I led you through the desert, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet. CEBA 6 Neither have you eaten bread nor drunk wine or beer during this time—so that you would know that I am the LORD your God. NIV 6 You ate no bread and drank no wine or other fermented drink. I did this so that you might know that I am the LORD your God. CEBA 7 When you arrived here, Sihon, Heshbon's king, and Og, Bashan's king, marched out to fight against us, but we defeated them. NIV 7 When you reached this place, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out to fight against us, but we defeated them. CEBA 8 We took possession of their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, Gadites, and half of Manasseh's tribe. NIV 8 We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh. CEBA 9 So then keep the words of this covenant and do them so you can succeed in all you do. NIV 9 Carefully follow the terms of this covenant, so that you may prosper in everything you do. CEBA 10 Right now, all of you are in the presence of the LORD your God—the leaders of your tribes, your elders, and your officials, all the Israelite males, NIV 10 All of you are standing today in the presence of the LORD your God--your leaders and chief men, your elders and officials, and all the other men of Israel, CEBA 11 your children, your wives, and the immigrants who live with you in your camp, the ones who chop your wood and those who draw your water— NIV 11 together with your children and your wives, and the aliens living in your camps who chop your wood and carry your water. CEBA 12 ready to enter into the LORD your God's covenant and into the agreement that the LORD your God is making with you right now. NIV 12 You are standing here in order to enter into a covenant with the LORD your God, a covenant the LORD is making with you this day and sealing with an oath, CEBA 13 That means the Lord will make you his own people right now—he will be your God just as he promised you and just as he swore to our ancestors: to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. NIV 13 to confirm you this day as his people, that he may be your God as he promised you and as he swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. CEBA 14 But I'm not making this covenant and this agreement with you alone NIV 14 I am making this covenant, with its oath, not only with you CEBA 15 but also with those standing here with us right now before the LORD our God, and also with those who aren't here with us right now. NIV 15 who are standing here with us today in the presence of the LORD our God but also with those who are not here today. CEBA 16 You know firsthand how we used to live in Egypt and how we passed right through the nations that you passed through. NIV 16 You yourselves know how we lived in Egypt and how we passed through the countries on the way here. CEBA 17 You saw the horrific things, the filthy idols of wood and stone, silver and gold, that they had with them. NIV 17 You saw among them their detestable images and idols of wood and stone, of silver and gold. CEBA 18 Make sure there isn't any one among you right now—male or female, clan or tribe—whose mind is turning from being with the LORD our God in favor of going to serve these nations' gods. Make sure there isn't any root among you that is sprouting poison and bitterness. NIV 18 Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the LORD our God to go and worship the gods of those nations; make sure there is no root among you that produces such bitter poison. CEBA 19 When that kind of person hears the words of this agreement, they congratulate themselves, thinking: I'll be fine even though I insist on being stubborn. This would cause something wet to dry up and become like something parched. NIV 19 When such a person hears the words of this oath, he invokes a blessing on himself and therefore thinks, "I will be safe, even though I persist in going my own way." This will bring disaster on the watered land as well as the dry. CEBA 20 The LORD won't be willing to forgive that kind of person; instead, the LORD's anger and passion will smolder against that person. Every curse written in this scroll will stretch out over them, and the LORD will wipe out their name from under the heavens. NIV 20 The LORD will never be willing to forgive him; his wrath and zeal will burn against that man. All the curses written in this book will fall upon him, and the LORD will blot out his name from under heaven. CEBA 21 Out of all Israel's tribes, the LORD will single them out for disaster in compliance with all the covenant curses that are written in this Instruction scroll. NIV 21 The LORD will single him out from all the tribes of Israel for disaster, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this Book of the Law. CEBA 22 Future generations, your children after you, or foreigners from distant lands will say: Look at all that land's plagues and the sicknesses that the LORD laid on it! NIV 22 Your children who follow you in later generations and foreigners who come from distant lands will see the calamities that have fallen on the land and the diseases with which the LORD has afflicted it. CEBA 23 Look at all its land burned by sulfur and salt, unsuitable for planting, unable to grow or produce any vegetation, as devastated as Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD devastated in anger and wrath! NIV 23 The whole land will be a burning waste of salt and sulfur--nothing planted, nothing sprouting, no vegetation growing on it. It will be like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in fierce anger. CEBA 24 Indeed, all nations will ask: Why did the LORD do this to this land? What led to this terrible display of anger? NIV 24 All the nations will ask: "Why has the LORD done this to this land? Why this fierce, burning anger?" CEBA 25 They will deduce: It was because those people abandoned the covenant of the LORD, their ancestors' God, which he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt. NIV 25 And the answer will be: "It is because this people abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, the covenant he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt. CEBA 26 They followed other gods, serving them and worshipping them—other gods that they hadn't experienced before and that the Lord hadn't designated for them. NIV 26 They went off and worshiped other gods and bowed down to them, gods they did not know, gods he had not given them. CEBA 27 Then the LORD's anger burned against that land, and he brought against it every curse written in this scroll. NIV 27 Therefore the LORD's anger burned against this land, so that he brought on it all the curses written in this book. CEBA 28 The LORD ripped them off their land in anger, wrath, and great fury. He threw them into other lands, and that's how things still stand today. NIV 28 In furious anger and in great wrath the LORD uprooted them from their land and thrust them into another land, as it is now." CEBA 29 The secret things belong to the LORD our God. The revealed things belong to us and to our children forever: to keep all the words of this covenant. NIV 29 The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.
