Deuteronomy 8

NLT 1 “Be careful to obey all the commands I am giving you today. Then you will live and multiply, and you will enter and occupy the land the swore to give your ancestors. NIV 1 Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land that the LORD promised on oath to your forefathers. NLT 2 Remember how the your God led you through the wilderness for these forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would obey his commands. NIV 2 Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. NLT 3 Yes, he humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food previously unknown to you and your ancestors. He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the . NIV 3 He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. NLT 4 For all these forty years your clothes didn’t wear out, and your feet didn’t blister or swell. NIV 4 Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years. NLT 5 Think about it: Just as a parent disciplines a child, the your God disciplines you for your own good. NIV 5 Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you. NLT 6 “So obey the commands of the your God by walking in his ways and fearing him. NIV 6 Observe the commands of the LORD your God, walking in his ways and revering him. NLT 7 For the your God is bringing you into a good land of flowing streams and pools of water, with fountains and springs that gush out in the valleys and hills. NIV 7 For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land--a land with streams and pools of water, with springs flowing in the valleys and hills; NLT 8 It is a land of wheat and barley; of grapevines, fig trees, and pomegranates; of olive oil and honey. NIV 8 a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey; NLT 9 It is a land where food is plentiful and nothing is lacking. It is a land where iron is as common as stone, and copper is abundant in the hills. NIV 9 a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills. NLT 10 When you have eaten your fill, be sure to praise the your God for the good land he has given you. NIV 10 When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you. NLT 11 “But that is the time to be careful! Beware that in your plenty you do not forget the your God and disobey his commands, regulations, and decrees that I am giving you today. NIV 11 Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. NLT 12 For when you have become full and prosperous and have built fine homes to live in, NIV 12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, NLT 13 and when your flocks and herds have become very large and your silver and gold have multiplied along with everything else, be careful! NIV 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, NLT 14 Do not become proud at that time and forget the your God, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt. NIV 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. NLT 15 Do not forget that he led you through the great and terrifying wilderness with its poisonous snakes and scorpions, where it was so hot and dry. He gave you water from the rock! NIV 15 He led you through the vast and dreadful desert, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock. NLT 16 He fed you with manna in the wilderness, a food unknown to your ancestors. He did this to humble you and test you for your own good. NIV 16 He gave you manna to eat in the desert, something your fathers had never known, to humble and to test you so that in the end it might go well with you. NLT 17 He did all this so you would never say to yourself, ‘I have achieved this wealth with my own strength and energy.’ NIV 17 You may say to yourself, "My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me." NLT 18 Remember the your God. He is the one who gives you power to be successful, in order to fulfill the covenant he confirmed to your ancestors with an oath. NIV 18 But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today. NLT 19 “But I assure you of this: If you ever forget the your God and follow other gods, worshiping and bowing down to them, you will certainly be destroyed. NIV 19 If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed. NLT 20 Just as the has destroyed other nations in your path, you also will be destroyed if you refuse to obey the your God. NIV 20 Like the nations the LORD destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the LORD your God.
