Exodus 14

HNV 1 The LORD spoke to Moshe, saying, NIV 1 Then the LORD said to Moses, HNV 2 "Speak to the children of Yisra'el, that they turn back and encamp before Pi-Hachirot, between Migdol and the sea, before Ba`al-Tzefon. You shall encamp opposite it by the sea. NIV 2 "Tell the Israelites to turn back and encamp near Pi Hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea. They are to encamp by the sea, directly opposite Baal Zephon. HNV 3 Par`oh will say of the children of Yisra'el, 'They are entangled in the land. The wilderness has shut them in.' NIV 3 Pharaoh will think, 'The Israelites are wandering around the land in confusion, hemmed in by the desert.' HNV 4 I will harden Par`oh's heart, and he will follow after them; and I will get honor over Par`oh, and over all his host; and the Mitzrim shall know that I am the LORD." They did so. NIV 4 And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and he will pursue them. But I will gain glory for myself through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD." So the Israelites did this. HNV 5 It was told the king of Mitzrayim that the people had fled; and the heart of Par`oh and of his servants was changed towards the people, and they said, "What is this we have done, that we have let Yisra'el go from serving us?" NIV 5 When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds about them and said, "What have we done? We have let the Israelites go and have lost their services!" HNV 6 He made ready his chariot, and took his army with him; NIV 6 So he had his chariot made ready and took his army with him. HNV 7 and he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Mitzrayim, and captains over all of them. NIV 7 He took six hundred of the best chariots, along with all the other chariots of Egypt, with officers over all of them. HNV 8 The LORD hardened the heart of Par`oh king of Mitzrayim, and he pursued after the children of Yisra'el; for the children of Yisra'el went out with a high hand. NIV 8 The LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, so that he pursued the Israelites, who were marching out boldly. HNV 9 The Mitzrim pursued after them: all the horses and chariots of Par`oh, his horsemen, and his army; and overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pi-Hachirot, before Ba`al-Tzefon. NIV 9 The Egyptians--all Pharaoh's horses and chariots, horsemen and troops--pursued the Israelites and overtook them as they camped by the sea near Pi Hahiroth, opposite Baal Zephon. HNV 10 When Par`oh drew near, the children of Yisra'el lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Mitzrim were marching after them; and they were very afraid. The children of Yisra'el cried out to the LORD. NIV 10 As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried out to the LORD. HNV 11 They said to Moshe, "Because there were no graves in Mitzrayim, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you treated us this way, to bring us forth out of Mitzrayim? NIV 11 They said to Moses, "Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? HNV 12 Isn't this the word that we spoke to you in Mitzrayim, saying, 'Leave us alone, that we may serve the Mitzrim?' For it were better for us to serve the Mitzrim, than that we should die in the wilderness." NIV 12 Didn't we say to you in Egypt, 'Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians'? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!" HNV 13 Moshe said to the people, "Don't be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will work for you today: for the Mitzrim whom you have seen today, you shall never see them again. NIV 13 Moses answered the people, "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. HNV 14 The LORD will fight for you, and you shall be still." NIV 14 The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still." HNV 15 The LORD said to Moshe, "Why do you cry to me? Speak to the children of Yisra'el, that they go forward. NIV 15 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on. HNV 16 Lift up your rod, and stretch out your hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Yisra'el shall go into the midst of the sea on dry ground. NIV 16 Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground. HNV 17 I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Mitzrim, and they shall go in after them: and I will get myself honor over Par`oh, and over all his host, over his chariots, and over his horsemen. NIV 17 I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them. And I will gain glory through Pharaoh and all his army, through his chariots and his horsemen. HNV 18 The Mitzrim shall know that I am the LORD, when I have gotten myself honor over Par`oh, over his chariots, and over his horsemen." NIV 18 The Egyptians will know that I am the LORD when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen." HNV 19 The angel of God, who went before the camp of Yisra'el, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from before them, and stood behind them. NIV 19 Then the angel of God, who had been traveling in front of Israel's army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them, HNV 20 It came between the camp of Mitzrayim and the camp of Yisra'el; and there was the cloud and the darkness, yet gave it light by night: and the one didn't come near the other all the night. NIV 20 coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel. Throughout the night the cloud brought darkness to the one side and light to the other side; so neither went near the other all night long. HNV 21 Moshe stretched out his hand over the sea, and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all the night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. NIV 21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the LORD drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, HNV 22 The children of Yisra'el went into the midst of the sea on the dry ground, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand, and on their left. NIV 22 and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left. HNV 23 The Mitzrim pursued, and went in after them into the midst of the sea: all of Par`oh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. NIV 23 The Egyptians pursued them, and all Pharaoh's horses and chariots and horsemen followed them into the sea. HNV 24 It happened in the morning watch, that the LORD looked out on the host of the Mitzrim through the pillar of fire and of cloud, and confused the Mitzrian army. NIV 24 During the last watch of the night the LORD looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud at the Egyptian army and threw it into confusion. HNV 25 He took off their chariot wheels, and they drove them heavily; so that the Mitzrim said, "Let's flee from the face of Yisra'el, for the LORD fights for them against the Mitzrim!" NIV 25 He made the wheels of their chariots come off so that they had difficulty driving. And the Egyptians said, "Let's get away from the Israelites! The LORD is fighting for them against Egypt." HNV 26 The LORD said to Moshe, "Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the waters may come again on the Mitzrim, on their chariots, and on their horsemen." NIV 26 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians and their chariots and horsemen." HNV 27 Moshe stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its strength when the morning appeared; and the Mitzrim fled against it. The LORD overthrew the Mitzrim in the midst of the sea. NIV 27 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak the sea went back to its place. The Egyptians were fleeing toward it, and the LORD swept them into the sea. HNV 28 The waters returned, and covered the chariots and the horsemen, even all Par`oh's army that went in after them into the sea. There remained not so much as one of them. NIV 28 The water flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen--the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed the Israelites into the sea. Not one of them survived. HNV 29 But the children of Yisra'el walked on dry land in the midst of the sea, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand, and on their left. NIV 29 But the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left. HNV 30 Thus the LORD saved Yisra'el that day out of the hand of the Mitzrim; and Yisra'el saw the Mitzrim dead on the seashore. NIV 30 That day the LORD saved Israel from the hands of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore. HNV 31 Yisra'el saw the great work which the LORD did to the Mitzrim, and the people feared the LORD; and they believed in the LORD, and in his servant Moshe. NIV 31 And when the Israelites saw the great power the LORD displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the LORD and put their trust in him and in Moses his servant.
