Exodus 5

HNV 1 Afterward Moshe and Aharon came, and said to Par`oh, "This is what the LORD, the God of Yisra'el, says, 'Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.'" NIV 1 Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the desert.' " HNV 2 Par`oh said, "Who is the LORD, that I should listen to his voice to let Yisra'el go? I don't know the LORD, and moreover I will not let Yisra'el go." NIV 2 Pharaoh said, "Who is the LORD, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD and I will not let Israel go." HNV 3 They said, "The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please let us go three days' journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to the LORD, our God, lest he fall on us with pestilence, or with the sword." NIV 3 Then they said, "The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the desert to offer sacrifices to the LORD our God, or he may strike us with plagues or with the sword." HNV 4 The king of Mitzrayim said to them, "Why do you, Moshe and Aharon, take the people from their work? Get back to your burdens!" NIV 4 But the king of Egypt said, "Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work!" HNV 5 Par`oh said, "Behold, the people of the land are now many, and you make them rest from their burdens." NIV 5 Then Pharaoh said, "Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working." HNV 6 The same day Par`oh commanded the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying, NIV 6 That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers and foremen in charge of the people: HNV 7 "You shall no longer give the people straw to make brick, as before. Let them go and gather straw for themselves. NIV 7 "You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks; let them go and gather their own straw. HNV 8 The number of the bricks, which they made before, you require from them. You shall not diminish anything of it, for they are idle; therefore they cry, saying, 'Let us go and sacrifice to our God.' NIV 8 But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don't reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, 'Let us go and sacrifice to our God.' HNV 9 Let heavier work be laid on the men, that they may labor therein; and don't let them pay any attention to lying words." NIV 9 Make the work harder for the men so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies." HNV 10 The taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spoke to the people, saying, This is what Par`oh says: "I will not give you straw. NIV 10 Then the slave drivers and the foremen went out and said to the people, "This is what Pharaoh says: 'I will not give you any more straw. HNV 11 Go yourselves, get straw where you can find it, for nothing of your work shall be diminished." NIV 11 Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced at all.' " HNV 12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Mitzrayim to gather stubble for straw. NIV 12 So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw. HNV 13 The taskmasters were urgent saying, "Fulfill your work quota daily, as when there was straw!" NIV 13 The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, "Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw." HNV 14 The officers of the children of Yisra'el, whom Par`oh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, "Why haven't you fulfilled your quota both yesterday and today, in making brick as before?" NIV 14 The Israelite foremen appointed by Pharaoh's slave drivers were beaten and were asked, "Why didn't you meet your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?" HNV 15 Then the officers of the children of Yisra'el came and cried to Par`oh, saying, "Why do you deal this way with your servants? NIV 15 Then the Israelite foremen went and appealed to Pharaoh: "Why have you treated your servants this way? HNV 16 No straw is given to your servants, and they tell us, 'Make brick!' and, behold, your servants are beaten; but the fault is in your own people." NIV 16 Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, 'Make bricks!' Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people." HNV 17 But he said, "You are idle! You are idle! Therefore you say, 'Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.' NIV 17 Pharaoh said, "Lazy, that's what you are--lazy! That is why you keep saying, 'Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.' HNV 18 Go therefore now, and work, for no straw shall be given to you, yet shall you deliver the same number of bricks!" NIV 18 Now get to work. You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks." HNV 19 The officers of the children of Yisra'el saw that they were in trouble, when it was said, "You shall not diminish anything from your daily quota of bricks!" NIV 19 The Israelite foremen realized they were in trouble when they were told, "You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day." HNV 20 They met Moshe and Aharon, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Par`oh: NIV 20 When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them, HNV 21 and they said to them, "May the LORD look at you, and judge, because you have made us a stench to be abhorred in the eyes of Par`oh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to kill us." NIV 21 and they said, "May the LORD look upon you and judge you! You have made us a stench to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us." HNV 22 Moshe returned to the LORD, and said, "Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Why is it that you have sent me? NIV 22 Moses returned to the LORD and said, "O Lord, why have you brought trouble upon this people? Is this why you sent me? HNV 23 For since I came to Par`oh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people; neither have you delivered your people at all." NIV 23 Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble upon this people, and you have not rescued your people at all."
