Ezekiel 1

MSG 1 When I was thirty years of age, I was living with the exiles on the Kebar River. On the fifth day of the fourth month, the sky opened up and I saw visions of God. NIV 1 In the thirtieth year, in the fourth month on the fifth day, while I was among the exiles by the Kebar River, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God. MSG 2 (It was the fifth day of the month in the fifth year of the exile of King Jehoiachin NIV 2 On the fifth of the month--it was the fifth year of the exile of King Jehoiachin-- MSG 3 that God's Word came to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, on the banks of the Kebar River in the country of Babylon. God's hand came upon him that day.) NIV 3 the word of the LORD came to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, by the Kebar River in the land of the Babylonians. There the hand of the LORD was upon him. MSG 4 I looked: I saw an immense dust storm come from the north, an immense cloud with lightning flashing from it, a huge ball of fire glowing like bronze. NIV 4 I looked, and I saw a windstorm coming out of the north--an immense cloud with flashing lightning and surrounded by brilliant light. The center of the fire looked like glowing metal, MSG 5 Within the fire were what looked like four creatures vibrant with life. Each had the form of a human being, NIV 5 and in the fire was what looked like four living creatures. In appearance their form was that of a man, MSG 6 but each also had four faces and four wings. NIV 6 but each of them had four faces and four wings. MSG 7 Their legs were as sturdy and straight as columns, but their feet were hoofed like those of a calf and sparkled from the fire like burnished bronze. NIV 7 Their legs were straight; their feet were like those of a calf and gleamed like burnished bronze. MSG 8 On all four sides under their wings they had human hands. All four had both faces and wings, NIV 8 Under their wings on their four sides they had the hands of a man. All four of them had faces and wings, MSG 9 with the wings touching one another. They turned neither one way nor the other; they went straight forward. NIV 9 and their wings touched one another. Each one went straight ahead; they did not turn as they moved. MSG 10 Their faces looked like this: In front a human face, on the right side the face of a lion, on the left the face of an ox, and in back the face of an eagle. NIV 10 Their faces looked like this: Each of the four had the face of a man, and on the right side each had the face of a lion, and on the left the face of an ox; each also had the face of an eagle. MSG 11 So much for the faces. The wings were spread out with the tips of one pair touching the creature on either side; the other pair of wings covered its body. NIV 11 Such were their faces. Their wings were spread out upward; each had two wings, one touching the wing of another creature on either side, and two wings covering its body. MSG 12 Each creature went straight ahead. Wherever the spirit went, they went. They didn't turn as they went. NIV 12 Each one went straight ahead. Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, without turning as they went. MSG 13 The four creatures looked like a blazing fire, or like fiery torches. Tongues of fire shot back and forth between the creatures, and out of the fire, bolts of lightning. NIV 13 The appearance of the living creatures was like burning coals of fire or like torches. Fire moved back and forth among the creatures; it was bright, and lightning flashed out of it. MSG 14 The creatures flashed back and forth like strikes of lightning. NIV 14 The creatures sped back and forth like flashes of lightning. MSG 15 As I watched the four creatures, I saw something that looked like a wheel on the ground beside each of the four-faced creatures. NIV 15 As I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel on the ground beside each creature with its four faces. MSG 16 This is what the wheels looked like: They were identical wheels, sparkling like diamonds in the sun. It looked like they were wheels within wheels, like a gyroscope. NIV 16 This was the appearance and structure of the wheels: They sparkled like chrysolite, and all four looked alike. Each appeared to be made like a wheel intersecting a wheel. MSG 17 They went in any one of the four directions they faced, but straight, not veering off. NIV 17 As they moved, they would go in any one of the four directions the creatures faced; the wheels did not turn about as the creatures went. MSG 18 The rims were immense, circled with eyes. NIV 18 Their rims were high and awesome, and all four rims were full of eyes all around. MSG 19 When the living creatures went, the wheels went; when the living creatures lifted off, the wheels lifted off. NIV 19 When the living creatures moved, the wheels beside them moved; and when the living creatures rose from the ground, the wheels also rose. MSG 20 Wherever the spirit went, they went, the wheels sticking right with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. NIV 20 Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, and the wheels would rise along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. MSG 21 When the creatures went, the wheels went; when the creatures stopped, the wheels stopped; when the creatures lifted off, the wheels lifted off, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. NIV 21 When the creatures moved, they also moved; when the creatures stood still, they also stood still; and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels rose along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. MSG 22 Over the heads of the living creatures was something like a dome, shimmering like a sky full of cut glass, vaulted over their heads. NIV 22 Spread out above the heads of the living creatures was what looked like an expanse, sparkling like ice, and awesome. MSG 23 Under the dome one set of wings was extended toward the others, with another set of wings covering their bodies. NIV 23 Under the expanse their wings were stretched out one toward the other, and each had two wings covering its body. MSG 24 When they moved I heard their wings - it was like the roar of a great waterfall, like the voice of The Strong God, like the noise of a battlefield. When they stopped, they folded their wings. NIV 24 When the creatures moved, I heard the sound of their wings, like the roar of rushing waters, like the voice of the Almighty, like the tumult of an army. When they stood still, they lowered their wings. MSG 25 And then, as they stood with folded wings, there was a voice from above the dome over their heads. NIV 25 Then there came a voice from above the expanse over their heads as they stood with lowered wings. MSG 26 Above the dome there was something that looked like a throne, sky-blue like a sapphire, with a humanlike figure towering above the throne. NIV 26 Above the expanse over their heads was what looked like a throne of sapphire, and high above on the throne was a figure like that of a man. MSG 27 From what I could see, from the waist up he looked like burnished bronze and from the waist down like a blazing fire. Brightness everywhere! NIV 27 I saw that from what appeared to be his waist up he looked like glowing metal, as if full of fire, and that from there down he looked like fire; and brilliant light surrounded him. MSG 28 The way a rainbow springs out of the sky on a rainy day - that's what it was like. It turned out to be the Glory of God! When I saw all this, I fell to my knees, my face to the ground. Then I heard a voice. NIV 28 Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. When I saw it, I fell facedown, and I heard the voice of one speaking.
