Genesis 2:4-25

RSV 4 These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created. In the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, NIV 4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens-- RSV 5 when no plant of the field was yet in the earth and no herb of the field had yet sprung up--for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no man to till the ground; NIV 5 and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no man to work the ground, RSV 6 but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground-- NIV 6 but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground-- RSV 7 then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. NIV 7 the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. RSV 8 And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man whom he had formed. NIV 8 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. RSV 9 And out of the ground the LORD God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. NIV 9 And the LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground--trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. RSV 10 A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. NIV 10 A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. RSV 11 The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one which flows around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; NIV 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. RSV 12 and the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. NIV 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there.) RSV 13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one which flows around the whole land of Cush. NIV 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. RSV 14 And the name of the third river is Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. NIV 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. RSV 15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. NIV 15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. RSV 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, "You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; NIV 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; RSV 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die." NIV 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die." RSV 18 Then the LORD God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him." NIV 18 The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." RSV 19 So out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. NIV 19 Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. RSV 20 The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for the man there was not found a helper fit for him. NIV 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. RSV 21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh; NIV 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh. RSV 22 and the rib which the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. NIV 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. RSV 23 Then the man said, "This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man." NIV 23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman, ' for she was taken out of man." RSV 24 Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and cleaves to his wife, and they become one flesh. NIV 24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. RSV 25 And the man and his wife were both naked, and were not ashamed. NIV 25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
