Genesis 39

CEB 1 When Joseph had been taken down to Egypt, Potiphar, Pharaoh's chief officer, the commander of the royal guard and an Egyptian, purchased him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there. NIV 1 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh's officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there. CEB 2 The LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man and served in his Egyptian master's household. NIV 2 The LORD was with Joseph and he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. CEB 3 His master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD made everything he did successful. NIV 3 When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did, CEB 4 Potiphar thought highly of Joseph, and Joseph became his assistant; he appointed Joseph head of his household and put everything he had under Joseph's supervision. NIV 4 Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. CEB 5 From the time he appointed Joseph head of his household and of everything he had, the LORD blessed the Egyptian's household because of Joseph. The LORD blessed everything he had, both in the household and in the field. NIV 5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the LORD was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field. CEB 6 So he handed over everything he had to Joseph and didn't pay attention to anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome. NIV 6 So he left in Joseph's care everything he had; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, CEB 7 Some time later, his master's wife became attracted to Joseph and said, "Sleep with me." NIV 7 and after a while his master's wife took notice of Joseph and said, "Come to bed with me!" CEB 8 He refused and said to his master's wife, "With me here, my master doesn't pay attention to anything in his household; he's put everything he has under my supervision. NIV 8 But he refused. "With me in charge," he told her, "my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. CEB 9 No one is greater than I am in this household, and he hasn't denied me anything except you, since you are his wife. How could I do this terrible thing and sin against God?" NIV 9 No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?" CEB 10 Every single day she tried to convince him, but he wouldn't agree to sleep with her or even to be with her. NIV 10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her. CEB 11 One day when Joseph arrived at the house to do his work, none of the household's men were there. NIV 11 One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside. CEB 12 She grabbed his garment, saying, "Lie down with me." But he left his garment in her hands and ran outside. NIV 12 She caught him by his cloak and said, "Come to bed with me!" But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house. CEB 13 When she realized that he had left his garment in her hands and run outside, NIV 13 When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house, CEB 14 she summoned the men of her house and said to them, "Look, my husband brought us a Hebrew to ridicule us. He came to me to lie down with me, but I screamed. NIV 14 she called her household servants. "Look," she said to them, "this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us! He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed. CEB 15 When he heard me raise my voice and scream, he left his garment with me and ran outside." NIV 15 When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house." CEB 16 She kept his garment with her until Joseph's master came home, NIV 16 She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home. CEB 17 and she told him the same thing: "The Hebrew slave whom you brought to us, to ridicule me, came to me; NIV 17 Then she told him this story: "That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me. CEB 18 but when I raised my voice and screamed, he left his garment with me and ran outside." NIV 18 But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house." CEB 19 When Joseph's master heard the thing that his wife told him, "This is what your servant did to me," he was incensed. NIV 19 When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, "This is how your slave treated me," he burned with anger. CEB 20 Joseph's master took him and threw him in jail, the place where the king's prisoners were held. While he was in jail, NIV 20 Joseph's master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king's prisoners were confined. But while Joseph was there in the prison, CEB 21 the LORD was with Joseph and remained loyal to him. He caused the jail's commander to think highly of Joseph. NIV 21 the LORD was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. CEB 22 The jail's commander put all of the prisoners in the jail under Joseph's supervision, and he was the one who determined everything that happened there. NIV 22 So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there. CEB 23 The jail's commander paid no attention to anything under Joseph's supervision, because the LORD was with him and made everything he did successful. NIV 23 The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph's care, because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.
