Jeremiah 10

GW 1 Listen to the message that the LORD has spoken to you, nation of Israel. NIV 1 Hear what the LORD says to you, O house of Israel. GW 2 This is what the LORD says: Don't learn the practices of the nations. Don't be frightened by the signs in the sky because the nations are frightened by them. NIV 2 This is what the LORD says: "Do not learn the ways of the nations or be terrified by signs in the sky, though the nations are terrified by them. GW 3 The religion of the people is worthless. Woodcutters cut down trees from the forest. The hands of craftsmen prepare them with axes. NIV 3 For the customs of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel. GW 4 Craftsmen decorate them with silver and gold and fasten them [together] with hammers and nails so that they won't fall over. NIV 4 They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter. GW 5 These trees are like scarecrows in cucumber gardens. They aren't able to speak. They have to be carried, because they can't walk. Don't be afraid of them. They can't harm you. They can't do you any good either. NIV 5 Like a scarecrow in a melon patch, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good." GW 6 No one is like you, O LORD. You are great. Your name is powerful. NIV 6 No one is like you, O LORD; you are great, and your name is mighty in power. GW 7 Everyone fears you, O King of the Nations. This is what you deserve. No one is like you among all the wise people in the nations or in all their kingdoms. NIV 7 Who should not revere you, O King of the nations? This is your due. Among all the wise men of the nations and in all their kingdoms, there is no one like you. GW 8 They are complete idiots. They learn nonsense from wooden idols. NIV 8 They are all senseless and foolish; they are taught by worthless wooden idols. GW 9 Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz. Craftsmen and goldsmiths shape these metals. The clothing for the idols is blue and purple, all made by skilled workers. NIV 9 Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz. What the craftsman and goldsmith have made is then dressed in blue and purple-- all made by skilled workers. GW 10 But the LORD is the only God. He is the living God and eternal king. The earth trembles when he is angry. The nations can't endure his fury. NIV 10 But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King. When he is angry, the earth trembles; the nations cannot endure his wrath. GW 11 Tell them this: These gods will disappear from the earth and from under heaven because they didn't make heaven and earth. NIV 11 "Tell them this: 'These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth, will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.' " GW 12 The LORD made the earth by his power. He set up the world by his skill. He stretched out the world by his understanding. NIV 12 But God made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding. GW 13 He speaks, and the water in the sky produces a storm. He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning flash with the rain. He brings wind out of his storehouses. NIV 13 When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar; he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses. GW 14 Everyone is stupid and ignorant. Metalsmiths are put to shame by their idols. Their statues are false [gods]. They can't breathe. NIV 14 Everyone is senseless and without knowledge; every goldsmith is shamed by his idols. His images are a fraud; they have no breath in them. GW 15 They are worthless jokes. When they are punished, they disappear. NIV 15 They are worthless, the objects of mockery; when their judgment comes, they will perish. GW 16 Jacob's God isn't like them. He made everything, and Israel is the tribe that belongs to him. His name is the LORD of Armies. NIV 16 He who is the Portion of Jacob is not like these, for he is the Maker of all things, including Israel, the tribe of his inheritance-- the LORD Almighty is his name. GW 17 Pick up your bags. You are being blockaded. NIV 17 Gather up your belongings to leave the land, you who live under siege. GW 18 This is what the LORD says: I am going to throw out those who live in the land at this time and cause trouble for them so that they will feel it. NIV 18 For this is what the LORD says: "At this time I will hurl out those who live in this land; I will bring distress on them so that they may be captured." GW 19 Oh, I'm wounded! My wound is serious. Then I thought that this is my punishment, and I will bear it. NIV 19 Woe to me because of my injury! My wound is incurable! Yet I said to myself, "This is my sickness, and I must endure it." GW 20 My tent is destroyed, and all my ropes are broken. My children have left me and have disappeared. My sons are gone from me and are no more; no one is left now to pitch my tent or to set up my shelter. GW 21 The shepherds are foolish. They don't look to the LORD for help. That is why they won't succeed, and all their flocks will be scattered. NIV 21 The shepherds are senseless and do not inquire of the LORD; so they do not prosper and all their flock is scattered. GW 22 The report has arrived. A tremendous uproar is coming from the land of the north. Its army will destroy Judah's cities and make them homes for jackals. NIV 22 Listen! The report is coming-- a great commotion from the land of the north! It will make the towns of Judah desolate, a haunt of jackals. GW 23 O LORD, I know that the way humans act is not under their control. Humans do not direct their steps as they walk. NIV 23 I know, O LORD, that a man's life is not his own; it is not for man to direct his steps. GW 24 Correct me, O LORD, but please be fair. Don't correct me when you're angry. Otherwise, you'll reduce me to nothing. NIV 24 Correct me, LORD, but only with justice-- not in your anger, lest you reduce me to nothing. GW 25 Pour out your fury on the nations who don't know you and on people who don't worship you. They have devoured the descendants of Jacob. They have devoured them completely. They have destroyed their homes. NIV 25 Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the peoples who do not call on your name. For they have devoured Jacob; they have devoured him completely and destroyed his homeland.
