Job 33

RSV 1 "But now, hear my speech, O Job, and listen to all my words. NIV 1 "But now, Job, listen to my words; pay attention to everything I say. RSV 2 Behold, I open my mouth; the tongue in my mouth speaks. NIV 2 I am about to open my mouth; my words are on the tip of my tongue. RSV 3 My words declare the uprightness of my heart, and what my lips know they speak sincerely. NIV 3 My words come from an upright heart; my lips sincerely speak what I know. RSV 4 The spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life. NIV 4 The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life. RSV 5 Answer me, if you can; set your words in order before me; take your stand. NIV 5 Answer me then, if you can; prepare yourself and confront me. RSV 6 Behold, I am toward God as you are; I too was formed from a piece of clay. NIV 6 I am just like you before God; I too have been taken from clay. RSV 7 Behold, no fear of me need terrify you; my pressure will not be heavy upon you. NIV 7 No fear of me should alarm you, nor should my hand be heavy upon you. RSV 8 "Surely, you have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the sound of your words. NIV 8 "But you have said in my hearing-- I heard the very words-- RSV 9 You say, 'I am clean, without transgression; I am pure, and there is no iniquity in me. NIV 9 'I am pure and without sin; I am clean and free from guilt. RSV 10 Behold, he finds occasions against me, he counts me as his enemy; NIV 10 Yet God has found fault with me; he considers me his enemy. RSV 11 he puts my feet in the stocks, and watches all my paths.' NIV 11 He fastens my feet in shackles; he keeps close watch on all my paths.' RSV 12 "Behold, in this you are not right. I will answer you. God is greater than man. NIV 12 "But I tell you, in this you are not right, for God is greater than man. RSV 13 Why do you contend against him, saying, 'He will answer none of my words'? NIV 13 Why do you complain to him that he answers none of man's words ? RSV 14 For God speaks in one way, and in two, though man does not perceive it. NIV 14 For God does speak--now one way, now another-- though man may not perceive it. RSV 15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, while they slumber on their beds, NIV 15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men as they slumber in their beds, RSV 16 then he opens the ears of men, and terrifies them with warnings, NIV 16 he may speak in their ears and terrify them with warnings, RSV 17 that he may turn man aside from his deed, and cut off pride from man; NIV 17 to turn man from wrongdoing and keep him from pride, RSV 18 he keeps back his soul from the Pit, his life from perishing by the sword. NIV 18 to preserve his soul from the pit, his life from perishing by the sword. RSV 19 "Man is also chastened with pain upon his bed, and with continual strife in his bones; NIV 19 Or a man may be chastened on a bed of pain with constant distress in his bones, RSV 20 so that his life loathes bread, and his appetite dainty food. NIV 20 so that his very being finds food repulsive and his soul loathes the choicest meal. RSV 21 His flesh is so wasted away that it cannot be seen; and his bones which were not seen stick out. NIV 21 His flesh wastes away to nothing, and his bones, once hidden, now stick out. RSV 22 His soul draws near the Pit, and his life to those who bring death. NIV 22 His soul draws near to the pit, and his life to the messengers of death. RSV 23 If there be for him an angel, a mediator, one of the thousand, to declare to man what is right for him; NIV 23 "Yet if there is an angel on his side as a mediator, one out of a thousand, to tell a man what is right for him, RSV 24 and he is gracious to him, and says, 'Deliver him from going down into the Pit, I have found a ransom; NIV 24 to be gracious to him and say, 'Spare him from going down to the pit; I have found a ransom for him'-- RSV 25 let his flesh become fresh with youth; let him return to the days of his youthful vigor'; NIV 25 then his flesh is renewed like a child's; it is restored as in the days of his youth. RSV 26 then man prays to God, and he accepts him, he comes into his presence with joy. He recounts to men his salvation, NIV 26 He prays to God and finds favor with him, he sees God's face and shouts for joy; he is restored by God to his righteous state. RSV 27 and he sings before men, and says: 'I sinned and perverted what was right, and it was not requited to me. NIV 27 Then he comes to men and says, 'I sinned, and perverted what was right, but I did not get what I deserved. RSV 28 He has redeemed my soul from going down into the Pit, and my life shall see the light.' NIV 28 He redeemed my soul from going down to the pit, and I will live to enjoy the light.' RSV 29 "Behold, God does all these things, twice, three times, with a man, NIV 29 "God does all these things to a man-- twice, even three times-- RSV 30 to bring back his soul from the Pit, that he may see the light of life. NIV 30 to turn back his soul from the pit, that the light of life may shine on him. RSV 31 Give heed, O Job, listen to me; be silent, and I will speak. NIV 31 "Pay attention, Job, and listen to me; be silent, and I will speak. RSV 32 If you have anything to say, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify you. NIV 32 If you have anything to say, answer me; speak up, for I want you to be cleared. RSV 33 If not, listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom." NIV 33 But if not, then listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom."
