John 12

WNT 1 Jesus, however, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany, where Lazarus was whom He had raised from the dead. NIV 1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus arrived at Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. WNT 2 So they gave a dinner there in honour of Jesus, at which Martha waited at table, but Lazarus was one of the guests who were with Him. NIV 2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. WNT 3 Availing herself of the opportunity, Mary took a pound weight of pure spikenard, very costly, and poured it over His feet, and wiped His feet with her hair, so that the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. NIV 3 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. WNT 4 Then said Judas (the Iscariot, one of the Twelve--the one who afterwards betrayed Jesus), NIV 4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, WNT 5 "Why was not that perfume sold for 300 shillings and the money given to the poor?" NIV 5 "Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages. " WNT 6 The reason he said this was not that he cared for the poor, but that he was a thief, and that being in charge of the money-box, he used to steal what was put into it. NIV 6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it. WNT 7 But Jesus interposed. "Do not blame her," He said, "allow her to have kept it for the time of my preparation for burial. NIV 7 "Leave her alone," Jesus replied. "[It was intended] that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. WNT 8 For the poor you always have with you, but you have not me always." NIV 8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me." WNT 9 Now it became widely known among the Jews that Jesus was there; but they came not only on His account, but also in order to see Lazarus whom He had brought back to life. NIV 9 Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. WNT 10 The High Priests, however, consulted together to put Lazarus also to death, NIV 10 So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, WNT 11 for because of him many of the Jews left them and became believers in Jesus. NIV 11 for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and putting their faith in him. WNT 12 The next day a great crowd of those who had come to the Festival, hearing that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, NIV 12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. WNT 13 took branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, shouting as they went, "God save him! Blessings on him who comes in the name of the Lord--even on the King of Israel!" NIV 13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna! " "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Blessed is the King of Israel!" WNT 14 And Jesus, having procured a young ass, sat upon it, just as the Scripture says, NIV 14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written, WNT 15 "Fear not, Daughter of Zion! See, thy King is coming riding on an ass's colt." NIV 15 "Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt." WNT 16 The meaning of this His disciples did not understand at the time; but after Jesus was glorified they recollected that this was written about Him, and that they had done this to Him. NIV 16 At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that they had done these things to him. WNT 17 The large number of people, however, who had been present when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and brought him back to life, related what they had witnessed. NIV 17 Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. WNT 18 This was also why the crowd came to meet Him, because they had heard of His having performed that miracle. NIV 18 Many people, because they had heard that he had given this miraculous sign, went out to meet him. WNT 19 The result was that the Pharisees said among themselves, "Observe how idle all your efforts are! The world is gone after him!" NIV 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, "See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!" WNT 20 Now some of those who used to come up to worship at the Festival were Greeks. NIV 20 Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the Feast. WNT 21 They came to Philip, of Bethsaida in Galilee, with the request, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." NIV 21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. "Sir," they said, "we would like to see Jesus." WNT 22 Philip came and told Andrew: Andrew and Philip told Jesus. NIV 22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus. WNT 23 His answer was, "The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. NIV 23 Jesus replied, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. WNT 24 In most solemn truth I tell you that unless the grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains what it was--a single grain; but that if it dies, it yields a rich harvest. NIV 24 I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. WNT 25 He who holds his life dear, is destroying it; and he who makes his life of no account in this world shall keep it to the Life of the Ages. NIV 25 The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. WNT 26 If a man wishes to be my servant, let him follow me; and where I am, there too shall my servant be. If a man wishes to be my servant, the Father will honour him. NIV 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me. WNT 27 Now is my soul full of trouble; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour. But for this purpose I have come to this hour. NIV 27 "Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. WNT 28 Father, glorify Thy name." Thereupon there came a voice from the sky, "I have glorified it and will also glorify it again." NIV 28 Father, glorify your name!" Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again." WNT 29 The crowd that stood by and heard it, said that there had been thunder. Others said, "An angel spoke to him." NIV 29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him. WNT 30 "It is not for my sake," said Jesus, "that that voice came, but for your sakes. NIV 30 Jesus said, "This voice was for your benefit, not mine. WNT 31 Now is a judgement of this world: now will the Prince of this world be driven out. NIV 31 Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. WNT 32 And I-- if I am lifted up from the earth--will draw all men to me." NIV 32 But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself." WNT 33 He said this to indicate the kind of death He would die. NIV 33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die. WNT 34 The crowd answered Him, "We have heard out of the Law that the Christ remains for ever. In what sense do you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is that Son of Man?" NIV 34 The crowd spoke up, "We have heard from the Law that the Christ will remain forever, so how can you say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this 'Son of Man'?" WNT 35 "Yet a little while," He replied, "the light is among you. Be faithful to the light that you have, for fear darkness should overtake you; for a man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going. NIV 35 Then Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going. WNT 36 In the degree that you have light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light." Jesus said this, and went away and hid Himself from them. NIV 36 Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light." When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them. WNT 37 But though He had performed such great miracles in their presence, they did not believe in Him-- NIV 37 Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him. WNT 38 in order that the words of Isaiah the Prophet might be fulfilled, "Lord, who has believed our preaching? And the arm of the Lord--to whom has it been unveiled?" NIV 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: "Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?" WNT 39 For this reason they were unable to believe--because Isaiah said again, NIV 39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere: WNT 40 "He has blinded their eyes and made their minds callous, lest they should see with their eyes and perceive with their minds, and should turn, and I should heal them." NIV 40 "He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn--and I would heal them." WNT 41 Isaiah uttered these words because he saw His glory; and he spoke of Him. NIV 41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus' glory and spoke about him. WNT 42 Nevertheless even from among the Rulers many believed in Him. But because of the Pharisees they did not avow their belief, for fear they should be shut out from the synagogue. NIV 42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; WNT 43 For they loved the glory that comes from men rather than the glory that comes from God. NIV 43 for they loved praise from men more than praise from God. WNT 44 But Jesus cried aloud, "He who believes in me, believes not so much in me, as in Him who sent me; NIV 44 Then Jesus cried out, "When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. WNT 45 and he who sees me sees Him who sent me. NIV 45 When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me. WNT 46 I have come like light into the world, in order that no one who believes in me may remain in the dark. NIV 46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness. WNT 47 And if any one hears my teachings and regards them not, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. NIV 47 "As for the person who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it. WNT 48 He who sets me at naught and does not receive my teachings is not left without a judge: the Message which I have spoken will judge him on the last day. NIV 48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day. WNT 49 Because I have not spoken on my own authority; but the Father who sent me, Himself gave me a command what to say and in what words to speak. NIV 49 For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it. WNT 50 And I know that His command is the Life of the Ages. What therefore I speak, I speak just as the Father has bidden me." NIV 50 I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say."
